We have a 05 CC Inspire with the C9 Cat engine. We have been told that we need to have the valve lash checked before 50k miles. We now have about 38k miles and have been advised by a cat mechanic that unless the engine is losing power or making noise that we are ok. And just get the valve lash checked at our convience. What is the forum's take on this advice?
Also, what is the best way to remove the cover to get at the valve cover on the engine. From what I can tell, the lower closet door frame has screws that protrude though the cover that must be removed. The easy way would be to remove the screws and try and slide the cover from under the door frame. If this does not work would probably need to remove the closet doors and frame. Has anyone done this and if so could you provide how you did it? This would be helpfull.

Thanks,

I have 06 Inspire. The book and most recommendations are 30k miles to have it checked. Is it worth the risk to push past since the next interval is like 100k miles. You will have to remove closet doors, unscrew the track and then remove the engine cover which is about 6 to 9 screws in the carpet. You can look in the engine compartment to get ballpark where the screws are located. While it's open make sure you lube the pac brake.

Ken,

At the advice of many on this forum, the advisor on the Cat RV hot-line & the local caterpillar dealer, I just had the valve lash adjusted on my C-13. I had about 38K miles on mine. Based on what I'd been told, it is best to get this done before the engine starts losing performance.
I did have to remove the lower closet door rail to gain access to my engine hatch, although you probably have a little different set up than I do. I believe it was about a $700 expense.

Ken, The Cat C-9 Engine Maintenance Manual states P1 Maintenance Initial Valve Lash Inspect/Adjust @ 15,000 mi, then P2 Maintenance Valve Lash Inspect/Adjust @ 100,000. mi.

Ken, I had mine done at 40,000. I agree with Buddy on how to remove doors and track. Cat in Omaha, NE. wanted $125.00 an hour to remove and install doors and track. It was not that tough to do.

Lift the closet doors out of the track, remove four screws on the track and lift it out, move the mattress to the front of the coach, cut a piece of PVC pipe to support the bed frame - - save $125.

Piece of cake.

Thanks to all that replied to my valve lash question.... I now have enough info to remove the closet door and get the valve lash adjusted by the Cat NC dealer.

Thanks again to all.

On our 2006 Allure the closet mirror doors had to be removed in order to remove the door hardware before you can re-move the cover. The factory (back then) removed the mirror doors because the CAT dealer did not want to take the risk and they broke one of the mirror doors in the process.
