Title: Backup Camera - monitor turns on in the rain

My 1998 Intrigue has had this issue as far back as the previous owner can remember; when driving in the rain, the backup camera monitor screen on the dash turns on and will not turn off.
Normally the backup camera monitor turns on when the trans is shifted into reverse or when the manual power button is pressed. When in reverse it cannot be shut off, but when not in reverse it can be turned on & off at will using the power button.

What I have found out so far is that the wire from the monitor to the camera runs in the ceiling of the coach from front to rear, and I had it ohm checked when the fuse for the camera blew and this wire checked OK. The fuse blew when I shifted into reverse and already had the monitor on at the time, although I had done this many times before without a problem. Since replacing the fuse it has not blown again.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what the 'trigger' is for turning on the camera monitor when shifting into reverse (like is it in the shift console, in the trans itself like a reverse gear switch, or maybe wired to the reverse lights in the back)? It seems logical to me that something at or very near the location where the reverse sensor is must be getting wet and shorting, making the camera turn on in the rain.

Update: Since my original post below, the rear view camera now blows the fuse whenever the transmission is shifted into reverse, even if the weather is not wet. The camera operates completely fine when turned on by the power button on the monitor, as long as the transmission is not in reverse; shifting into reverse blows the fuse every time, rain or shine.

I'm sure backup camera technology has come a long way since 1998. If anyone has experienced this issue or has otherwise replaced/upgraded a backup camera of similar vintage I would appreciate any recommendations or advice.

Thanks,
Mark M

Well, it sounds like something is shorting out. You should try dis-connecting the lead from the back-up camera system (probably coming from the monitor) that hooks up to the reverse signal and see what happens. It might just work for a bit longer.... Otherwise I'd just replace the system with a new color kit - camera & monitor. Yes the technology has changed since '98, mostly that the price has come down and the picture (day or night) is much better. Shop around, but I like http://www.rearviewsafety.com/ (http://www.rearviewsafety.com/) kits.
