Does anyone in the forum tow a Honda CR-V four wheels down? What has been your experience?
What about a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited?
Realizing how different these. Vehicles are, I'm just looking for advice....

We've towed a 2012 Honda CRV for the past two years with no issues. We really like the car and it is a comfortable car to drive.
The battery on the CRV can discharge during a long tow if you don't either pull a fuse or run a charge line from the coach to the car battery. I ran a charge line from the coach and it works fine.

I tow a 2014 CRV. AWD EX. Manual says don't exceed 65 & and no more than 8 hrs.
After 8 hrs. Need to start the motor to juice the tranny.
Towed it 2000 miles so far. All good.
We had the M&G brake system installed.
No complaints.

Don't know what year of GC you are talking about but we towed a '00 GC over 100,000 with no problems and it had over 160,000 on the clock. All of this with nothing but normal maintenance. Would still have it but the wife T-Boned a van with it and totaled it. Bought a '14 to tow but it is to nice so bought a '99GC to tow. Can't beat a Jeep but I have ridden in a new CRV and they are very nice.

A vehicle with a transfer case and a neutral, and a steering column without a lock are very nice to have. That means you eliminate almost all the problems with 4 wheel down towing. After I hook up our tow bar and connect electrics I sit in the drivers seat, pull the transfer case into neutral, put the transmission back into park, remove the key. This takes about 20 seconds. No fuse to remove. No limits on tow speed or length of time towing.
When you want to reconnect you do the reverse. Put key in ignition, turn key to just before the motor starts, put transfer case in 2 wheel drive, you are ready to go. 20 seconds time.
So if you decide to get a Jeep, my recommendation is to make sure you get a transfer case with neutral. Honda's are great cars, I have owned 2 Accords and 1 S2000. But they do not offer a transfer case as described above.

I've towed an '02 CR-V perhaps 60,000 miles behind three different coaches and it has been great. Weighs only 3,000 lbs or so. Solved the battery dying problem (after getting tired of pulling the fuse) by installing an A/B switch. Off to tow stops the electrical drain from all of the dash stuff. On to drive as normal. There was even a small plate in the dash that was removed to install the switch.
I run the car through the gears every evening when I'm moving (usually average 350 miles/day). Simple procedure that doesn't require unhooking.
In summary, my experience with the CR-V has been great. I'll replace it in kind if I live long enough!

We have a '98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L - only about 20 k of these built. We have towed it through three coaches - 200,000 miles plus - has 124,000 on the speedometer. Keep thinking we should trade but it runs great, is a real hot rod, comfortable, and a great tow. If we hang on to it long enough it might become a collector car and start appreciating.

Add us to the CRV Toad club too. 07 CRV EXL AWD. We bought this because of the light weight, which was needed when it was behind our Bounder. We have about 45K of Toad duty with it, and do the normal maintenance except I have the drive train and transmission serviced with the Toad Miles plus Driving Miles added together. (For example, trans fluid changed with say 20K driving and 10K Toad - 30K of wear. Etc.)
Our 07 is OK. I joke that it has never seen a small bump of a hill that it will not downshift for. It's not very good on the soundproofing, with wind and road noise. We changed to a slightly higher profile tire, picking up an 1" of ground clearance, and these are more off road then street, so this really added to the road noise. Finally, never have been to impressed with the MPG, can be in the high teens with a combo of highway and city driving. At highways speeds of say 65, 23-25MPG (with the older street tires helping the MPG). If we are traveling at 60MPH, and don't get rear ended by everyone passing us, we have seen 26-28MPG. Final item on the 07, which was the new generation then, was no Bluetooth. Honda was working very hard to keep the upper end CRV EXL AWD's from stealing sales from the Acura RDX. (Drove the 2007 RDX, quite a bit nicer ride, pretty quiet with different window seals and more soundproofing. And boy did that Turbo help on the power front!!)
I have not heard if the newer generation is quieter, or has other improvements over our 07 generation.
I'd say if the higher weight of the Jeep is not a problem for your coach, to go test drive them both. You might want/need the little bit more space of the Jeep. And, I know the offroad capabilities will be superior over the CRV. (Though I admit it has been good on some pretty rough dirt roads.) And I kind of like the Diesel option of the Jeep too...
Both are good at what they do, but he do different things!
Best to all,
Smitty

Have another question...Considered buying a Cadillac SRX to two 4 down. Just happened a GM Rep was there. He told me very strongly NOT to exceed 65 MPH if I bought the SRX. I said I would not on a sustained basis but that an occasional 70 might be necessary in a tight spot. In that case, he said..."Do NOT buy this SRX". It cannot be towed 4 down any faster than 65 no matter what!!Does anyone tow a Cadillac SRX? What is your experience/advise? Thanks. D Jean CC 81072

PLEASE help me make a decision. FMCA and GM's owner's manual states that it is OK to tow a 2014 Cadillac SRX 4 wheels down as long as you NEVER exceed 65 mph. I have always set my COACH's cruise control at 65 mph. That seems to me to be the sweet spot on my C-9 Cat 400 HP 2007 CC Tribute 260. BUT, sometimes, I realize my speed is 70+ when on a downhill grade or I get in a "tight spot"....Of course, I get it back to 65 as soon as I can. I never drive over 65 on a sustained basis. If you tow an SRX, please share your experience. Do you go over 65? If so, any transmission and/or warrenty issues? Thanks, D Jean CC 81072
