Hi - Jeannie and I are in the process of looking for a good place to stay in western NC. Hope to be within shooting distance of Sugar Mountain for some skiing. Also would like to visit Asheville for the city stuff. Our stay would put us through the winter months. Just curious if anyone can recommend a good place to us. NC isn't really a snowbird state so I'm not sure if many stay there in the winter time.

I can certainly recommend Mountain View RV Park in Lake Toxaway. It is truly a beautiful RV resort. However, I am not sure how it would be in winter in terms of snow and the last few miles into the place from Brevard is two lane, steep and winding. That did not stop the many Newells, Provosts, Magna's and other large luxury coaches we saw there. It is not far from Asheville.

Sorry I referred to Mountain Falls as 'Mountain View'. My goof. It is indeed a nice RV resort. Are they open all year and, if so, is the NCDOT diligent in keeping 64 down the mountain cleared of snow?
Those lots on the summit are certainly going to be spectacular.

Tom Johnson Camping Center in Marion is a pretty good central location. It's big rig friendly, elevation about 1500 feet, within an hour drive from Asheville and Boone. Rates are cheap too. I think about $35 per night.

Believe it or not, it does not snow there much if at all. And yes if it does snow it is the main road to several towns so it is a priority for them.
Yes they are open year round. The lots are 136, 137 and 139. They may now Resorts Blvd. The post office has them go to street addresses.

Hi Scott,
We've been coming to Asheville for years and often stayed at Wilson's Campground. It's on the French Broad River. The riverwalk greenway runs right through the middle of the campground which is a great 4-6 mile dog walking trail. There's a big city park (Carrier Park) next to the campground which always seems to have a lot of stuff going on. The campground road and RV pads are paved. A negative aspect is that it's right off of I-240 which can get noisy at times. We liked Asheville so much that we've bought a 2nd house here (our main house is in Florida). Our house is in Fletcher which is a little south of Asheville and is near Rutledge Lake Campground that seems to be well maintained and caters to big rigs.

Vince - Thanks. We drove down and looked at about 8 campgrounds.
Didn't find any that worked. Some just aren't open year around. Others had issues like no Verizon cell phone service, poor power, horrific access problems and/or no satellite view. Plus all were very over priced IMHO for what you're getting. Asheville was, indeed, a very nice area which we liked. The mountains are packed tight in there meaning little to no large open meadows exist. Lots of ups/downs to get around in that region with steep long grades. Many things are built on the sides of steep slopes to include campgrounds. Access is thus steep and washed out. I'd be concerned about this in winter if it's a heavy snow situation like last season was. Anyway we bailed out after two days of disappointing visits and made the decision to stay here (Lehighton, PA) which is a very nice campground open all year long. Power, water, sewer, internet all excellent and we've got support from the owner should we need some help in the winter. Safe travels.
