Don't know about the green light,  but when I hit the econ button,  the red light comes on.  The way I understand it,  when in the economy mode,  the tranny downshift is delayed to keep the engine RPM  lower for a longer period to conserve fuel.

If you push the mode button that saves fuel in less hilly terrain. Don't use it when in mountainous areas. I live in SC and use it a lot because the terrain is flat. Check your owners manual under Allison and it will explain in detail.

As others have said, you won't notice much difference with Mode on unless try it in the correct terrain.  If you are in an area with rolling hills like parts of I-5 in the middle of CA you can turn it on and off and feel the difference.  In the mountains it just makes the engine work harder.

Correct. But really only makes a difference in rolling hills where the trans downshifts on small hills then upshifts, then downshifts, the upshifts. It keeps the trans from downshifting till the engine slows down to max peak torque.
