Title: How much coolant?

We blew a coolant hose on the turbo and lost all the coolant. The Cummins ISL, 06 vintage, shut down and left us sitting on the side of SR 395 in the north end of Kettle Falls, WA.

We found a local shop that made a new hose filled the system with water and got us to a safe place. They dont stock the ES Complete that our 07 Allure/Cummins ISL needs but will bring in special order.

How many galons will it take?

Check your terbo cooling hoses, 4 of them, there is a lot of heat there and CC did not insall any shielding. We plan to add some.

Jim,

I just went through the same drill. We put 13 gallons in.

Thanks Lyle, one says 13 and the other 24. This is Cummins ISL 8.9 liter motor. The reason this is a bother is the shop here in Kettle Falls doesn't stock the ES Complete so we'll probably have to bring in in from Cummins in Spokane a 3 hour round trip.

Don't want to get more than we need but don't want to come up short either.

Jim, It depends upon which hoses are being replaced and how much the shop has to drain to work on that particular area.  It also depends upon whether you are using a premix like Cummins compleat or if you plan to add 50% water. We had to replace our coolant bypass hoses (4) and they are on top so we didn't have to do a full drain. I suspect that the entire system capacity is about 24 or more. That would include the engine, the radiator, the CAC, and overflow (expansion) tank. It would be best to ask the shop that is going to do the work for their estimate. You could always fill it with water when the work is done and then do a complete system drain and measure how much you drain out.

Jim, After my last post I reviewed my maintenance log book and found that the last time we did a complete drain, a few years ago, it took 13 gallons to refill. So, I guess this most recent episode was a complete drain as we refilled again with 13 gallons.

Thank you Lyle, this will be a complete drain and refill. To move us off the road to a safe place we just filled the system with water, 10 or more gal.

As such I will want to dump it all and go for a full fill. I guess I should plan on 24 gal. I picked up 12 gal of distilled water in hopes we can get the concentrate. I have 3 gal of premix on had we can add if needed.

Up Date:

We drained the system and refilled it with 17 gallons of ES Complete premix. Also replaced all 4 of the small hoses that connect to the top of the head tank.

Then we ran from Kettle Falls to Republic Washington over Sherman pass in 80 degree temps, all worked OK

Jim Cooley of Oregon Motor Coach had the correct 17 gal number.
