Does anyone know of a route planner that I can use that will actually also tell me the elevation of the routes roads also.  I want to take a mountain trip, but I also want to make sure I don't end up on the side of the road broke.

Thanks
Mike

Rand McNally now has online Tripmaker which loads into the Rand McNally RV GPS products. Haven't used it yet but it looks interesting.  This review says that it shows elevation as you go. If you want just elevation info separate from GPS.  Mountain Directory has an app. Mountain Directory West on the App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/app/id990687087)

We use RV Trip Wizard. Good add on tool for trip planning.

I have climbed grades as steep as 11% with an ambient temp over 100 degrees without issue.  There is a book that is available showing grades on roads in the west.  After traveling for more than 20 years I finally tossed the book.  The main issue is how narrow the road is and whether it is navigable by longer coaches.  That's a totally different issue.  TWI  2004 Intrigue  and formerly 98 36' Allure.  and before that 34' Airstream TT with Crew cab pickup.

Not quite what you are asking about, but I have a paperback book that is a truckers manual for mountain grades in the Western United States.  I wish I could remember the name, but it is in the RV and I am not. :-(  It is a most helpful book when considering which mountain passes are reasonable for our use and which are not.  Perhaps another member of this list will remember the name.  I strongly recommend it.

The name of the mountain grades booklet is MOUNTAIN DIRECTORY WEST for Truckers, RV, and Motorhome Drivers. You can buy it at any Camping World, list price is $16.95.

When we moved in 40'+ motorhomes several years ago, first a gulf stream, then a country coach and now an Allegro Bus, each had in dash GPS as does our Chevy Suburban.  However the cost of updating maps in these things is ridiculous, and I much prefer the Garmin  interface anyhow, so we continued to use our Garmin Nuvi with free lifetime updates in the Chevy and I bought a Garmin Dezl 560 for the coach:

There is now a larger screen version - the 770, with a 7" screen for about the same price I paid for the 5".  Either way these things have a truck or RV mode, where you enter your length, height, etc, and which prevents you from choosing inappropriate roads.  You can also interface with the web based Garmin Basecamp and plot your routes in full detail.  Personally I wouldn't drive this 43' coach without the Dezl.

The Allstays campground app tells you the elevation of campsites.  It also tells you of grades up or down.
