Our house is just about sold, and were packed up and will be ready to leave Portland for points South right around Halloween. I'd like to travel down 95/395, but have never driven on it. Any experiences that you may share for travel that time of year?

Jaymalee,
I have driven this road several times. Oregon has some hills, however, doable. Not a lot of traffic so easy to travel. I have only gone as far south as Reno an 395.
We have stayed at a RV park in Likely, CA. The name of the park is Likely Place Golf & RV Resort. They have an 18 hole golf course at the park. It is about 16 miles south of Alturas, CA. I'm not sure they would be open that late in the year. Nice park about a mile off 395 and seem like in the middle of nowhere. Great for an overnight stop if open.

395 is great drive at that time of year, but does require being aware that the road gets to some higher elevation in places and, though still unlikely, a little snow or ice could happen. Just want to be aware of the weather in your timing. Enjoy!

We have 395 from Reno to Victorville a few times throughout the year. That early shouldn't be a problem. As someone else said just watch the weather, if El Nino and clod hits all bets are off. But even then take I80 east to 95 south to us6 west to 395 in Bishop. Very low hills and never had issue with snow even at Christmas time.
In-laws used to live in Elko and we live in So. Cal.

The route you mentioned should be passable that time of year but as always watch the weather reports. This route involves some high passes.
I have been traveling the various routes south for about 15 years. I recommend from Portland take I-5 to Eugene. Then Hwy 58 over the Cascades to Hwy 97. South on Hwy 97 to K-Falls to Hwy 39 to Oregon border where it turns to Hwy 139 in California. Take Hwy 139 to Hwy 299 towards Alturas and Hwy 395. Follow Hwy 395 to Southern Calf.
Hope this is some help.

Bo the only high place south of Reno is 395 near mammoth. Our alternate has one short hill on 6 before Bishop.

Alternatively, US Hwy 26 to 97 at Madras, 97 south to LaPine, then take the scenic Silver Lake Cutoff (OR31) to Lakeview and US395 south. That is my favorite route. I have taken it many times all seasons.

Great drive. However you could find your self in an early snow storm. Check weather before leaving.

That could be doable! Especially with a stop at The Cowboy Dinner Tree for a chicken or steak dinner.
