We are outside outside of Richmond Va with oil coming out of the oil spout inlet and the dip stick. I just created a make-shift to stop for the oil from the inlet and purchased a one foot dip stick to plug that hole.

Can anyone give be the specific length of the dipstick for

9dg02301  ----  engine serial number

I haver called Cat dealers and no one seems to have the dip stick for the engine number above. If I could get some measurements of the length of the dip stick and how far above the bottom tip is full it would really help. I could create a dip stick that would give me a clue if I have too much or not enough oil in the oil tank.

If you have ideas please call me and share

Not sure I understand what is happening.  Did you lose your dipstick?  Why would you have oil coming out of the oil fill hole unless you have overfilled the crankcase?

CAT does have a toll free customer service # (sorry but don't have it) and I suspect if you call and give your engine serial #, they should be able to give you the specs on your dipstick.

Gary,

Thank You for the response ----several days ago we had the light come on  Silver Leaf and dash that the oil pressure was low. It only took a couple seconds before the engine was turned off with the lose of steering and braking. We were on a freeway. I quickly got out check the dip stick and it indicated I needed oil . I removed the oil pressure cap and added two quarts of oil. Our location on the freeway was causing drivers to make moves to miss a collision with us. I was rather stressed and forgot to replace the oil stick and the pressure cap. We now have a motorhome covered with oil in the engine area and the tow car.
Currently we have plugged both sources for oil exhaust, but we do not know if we have too much oil or not enough, would too much oil case serious damage to the engine.
Tomorrow I am going to try and go to a Heavy Duty Truck Repair.

The Cat Hot LINE # is 877-777-3126, they can probably give you the info you need. If all else fails call Jake Smith, ex CC guy, At Peterson CAT at 541-852-7676.

Good Luck

Stan :

Sorry, I for got to answer your other question. Low oil or low oil pressure, the C9 engine shuts down, too much oil the engine blows it out the breather under the engine. In each case no damage to the engine. Hell, I lost 12 qts, of oil, due to a faulty O ring, and no damage to the engine. A CAT is pretty bullet proof.

Get the Truck Shop to pressure wash the back of the coach and front of the car, make sure they get the radiator

Stan,

I have a 2005 CC with the Cat C9 engine. I will be at my coach on Tuesday. I can give you the dip stick information you have requested at that time if you still need it.

Stan, the CAT dipstick will give an inaccurate reading because CC installed the engine at a five degree (as I recall) incline.  "Full" indication will be an overfill.  CC replaced my dipstick early on, but I don't know what role CAT played in the swap.
With a new CAT dipstick, I would recommend draining the oil completely, refilling with the specified quantity (39 quarts?), and using the indicated level as the full mark.  I seem to recall some owners had a new full line scribed on the original dipstick.

My C9 in my 05 Inspire took 34 qts to fill. CAT was warned but still put 36 in as that's what the computer called for. It would blow oil all over the rear of the coach to the point it was running off the flap and coated everything on the back up to the top cap. I put in the Fumoto valve after the first time so I could take two out if it happened again. Their computer will show 36 but that is not correct.

Mike ,

The solution was I had a sensor value. The sensor was sending data to the online computer that the oil pressure was insufficient, that resulted in the replacement of the sensor, new 34 quarts of oil, filter, replacement of oil filler cap and an dipstick.

That depends on who supplied the dipstick in the first place. If it was CC  CAT will not have any info for you.

CC technician at the factory told me there are inconsistencies in the dipsticks on 2006 Inspires with the C9 Cat. He instructed me to change oil putting in 32 QTS and look at my dipstick with the engine cold and having set overnight.  "That's the full level on the dipstick in your coach."

Just to throw another variable in the mix:  my Inspire has a remote oil filter installed by CC. This adds an additional 4 qts. of oil to the requirements - a total of 36 qts for me. If your filter is not mounted to the engine, be sure to allow for the increased oil need.
