Hi Folks,

I have chosen to replace my tires with Michelins. My Coach has 315-80 F and R-22 R I know there has been many posts in the past on this but do not know what the current thoughts are. They are out of the R-22's and the store had Michelin on the phone and they said to use the 315" all around just run lower pressures in the rear. The big difference seems to be the width of the tires 315 are about 1.1" wider reducing the spacing on the duels. Plus the lower pressures would widen the tire even more. So, the help I need is, are the 315's in the rear going to be OK with everything considered. There is only about a $10.00 difference each in the price of the tires.

Thanks all,

Chris

Some Magnas, just don't have the clearance for 315's for the duals at the openings, and if they don't have 12R's, then you need to try 295R 22.5 in the rears. I would hate to see you tear up your wheel well's. I know the 295 will reduce the accuracy of your speedometer and odometer, but that can be corrected. TWI 2004 Intrigue 42' with tag 11731

Bridgestone makes an excellent 22.5. The R250. I like it better than the Michelin's Rich 2002 Magna

FMCA Tire Program also works with the BF Goodrich (Made by Michelin) ST230's. These do come in the 12R size.

And note, I need 6 12R's too, and the San Diego tire shop I work with only had one year old Michelin XZE and the same with the BF Goodrich ST230's available. They are going to do some more checking with their tire warehouse, normally they will not check dates, but the Manager said he had one gent that he thought would do so for him. I told him I would take any combo of 4 and 2 mix as long as the dates were under 6 months of age.
(I have 8 tires on the coach, but had to replace to pot hole damaged tires during the last Michelin tire shortage back ing mid summer of 2015, ended up with the BF Goodrich ST230's. Thus no problem on mixing the two brands. I'd just make sure that the 4 on the duals matched, and then the other two will to to the steers, with the existing ST230's on the Tag.)

My Plan B, is to either go with 6 Hankook AH12 (But, still trying to understand the ramifications of the Load Range G vs existing ties H. Though looking at my 4 corner weights, the G range will easily support my rear drives and tags, with a bit higher PSI.
Or, possibly the Yokohama 104Z.

Our last 6 existing Michelin XZE are 0310 date code, no signs of cracking, and have always been properly maintained PSI wise. So I feel I could safely go longer until Michelin/BF Goodrich 12R's are flowing again. (Though I admit, I prefer replacing them before this years long trip, starting in mid May. Figure I could start the trip, and then when they do start flowing into the inventory pipeline again, pick up the 6 tires on the trip.)

As far as 315, possibly they will fit your rear's without an issue, some CC's have had the required spacing, but many do have the mentioned spacing concerns. For sure, I would remain with the 315's on the steer for your coach.

Best of luck to you,

Smitty

Olin Mott Tires in Tampa FL had Michelins in stock when we purchased ours.

We bought 295 80R 22.5 XZA2 Energy tires for our Allure. They replaced our 12R 22.5 B F Goodrich tires.

We were happy with the B F Goodrich tires but the Michelins do ride better.

Hi Lonny/Dianne - I'd seen some your earlier posts on other boards that the ST230's had treated you well. They were on my short list when I bought these existing set of shoes of XZE's.

Did you have your odometer/speedometer adjusted for the 295's? And do you recall if the PSI settings were the same between the 295's and 12R's? (Assume the same Load Range of H?)

295's do open up many more model tires then the limited ones available for 12R's.

TIA, and best,

Smitty,

we liked the ST230's. The sidewalls were cracking at 6 years and lots of miles which is not unusual. We decided to change to Michelins XZA2 Energy tires and take advantage of the FMCA discount. We do like the ride of the Michelins better.

We did not change the odometer/speedometer. The tire guy at Olin Mott Commercial in Tampa said that it would only make 1mph difference and that the speedometer would say that you are going about 1-2mph faster than you are actually going. (I liked that! LOL)

We run 110psi in front and 115psi on rear. Max air pressure is 120psi but of course he doesn't run max psi due to expansion when they get hot.

Our coach is only 33' and we don't have a tag axle.

Yes, load range H for both.

Here's the link to the specs for the XZA2 Energy: Tire and Retread Selector | Michelin Truck (http://www.michelintruck.com/tires-and-retreads/selector/#!/info/xza2-energy)

Tire and Retread Selector | Michelin Truck (http://www.michelintruck.com/tires-and-retreads/selector/#!/info/xza2-energy) Michelin's Truck Tire or Retread Selector tool allows you to find the perfect commercial tire or retread for your business, selecting truck tires or retreads for any application.

right

Hope this helps. Yes the Michelins are more expensive but we know feel the improved ride is worth it.

Thanks for the follow up info on the 295/80's. I'll do some measuring to ensure our 04 Allure with mentioned tag has the space clearance needed on the dual's, as the 295's are a bit wider, times 2. (Very possible we have different running gear between our coaches, and details do matter:)!).

Gent I'm working with has asked me to come into let him look over our XZE's, DoT of 0510 - as he felt that as long as we'd properly maintained them as far as PSI and abuse (We have.), no reason to rush into buying replacements.

(I know Michelin say's to go with yearly inspections and unless something is wrong, that in RV service we could run to 10 years of age. And I know many people do this. I always had planned on a 5-7 year window of change out, as I felt it was cheap insurance in the overall scheme of things, to avoid blowout problems. For both our safety and those around us, as well as to avoid possible costly repairs from a buzzsaw tire... Really wanted to swap out before this years travels. But if it is another month or so before the next batch of tires come in, I could pick them up on the trip.)

You, and others too, may recall other posts from me about tires. I had a batch of Bridgestone R268's ordered from a well known tire shop in Junction City. Well the tires were not more fuel efficient then my existing XZE's, and the date codes were older then 6 months of age (7-11 months old between the 6 sent.). For these reasons, and some personal schedule problems, I elected to not take this set. Not real pleased with how things ended with this tire dealer. At first I assumed it was honest miss communication with the Salesman. But over the course of almost three months. I was preached at by the Tire Manager about DoT/age don't mean anything. That I had 'specifically asked for these tires' (I had not, I asked the Salesman 'Pro' if those tires would meet my need of being more fuel efficient then my XZE's. He said they would, and they're not.) And then to finally be called a liar by a company - well, not too slick at the Customer Good Will department... I ended up eating a restocking fee, just to be away from them. Was not worth the costs or time to do what I felt I should do - go up and contest this in court. I DO NOT LIKE BEING CALLED A LIAR. And, even though I explained this to the Manager a few times - I WAS NEVER SENT MY COPY OF THE INVOICE BY EMAIL (As the Salesman said he would do.). The invoice stated 'No guarantee on age of tires.' If I had been sent the invoice, and seen this, I would have called then and cancelled the order. I had clearly told the Salesman that 'We'd need to agree to disagree.' on the importance of tire age. I'm the customer, and if age is important to me on a product - well, it's supposed to be what the customer wants...

Sorry to go on:)! Just wanted to explain why I'm still looking for tires. And now almost 9-10 months after I had to replace two of my damaged tires during the Michelin RV Tire Shortage of 2015 - dang if I don't have another one hitting me again in 2016:)!

Best, and thanks again for the follow up info.

Just to close the loop on my part of this thread.

TCI Manager in San Diego did a thorough inspection of our XZE's. Said he felt I could get another season out of them. Maybe more, after an inspection next year too. But, he understood that if we'd be driving at all times just wondering if something was going to go wrong, that it was not a comfortable way to travel.

They have XZA2 Energy 295/80 22.5 in stock with 0416 DoT dates. Going to get 6 of these, put them on the Steers and Drives. Move the still young BF Goodrich ST230 12R's to the Tag. Get all wheel alignment, which most of you know also includes revalidate of the ride height. I'm going to also ask them to see if I can remain within spec and change the toe in slightly. (The coach tracks well, with just a tad straight line wandering. Probably not fair to call it wandering, it's just enough need for correction from time to time. That it reminded me that the Coltron Truck tech that did the last alignment 6 years ago now, did tell me he was going to he leave the toe in as it was, but to come back if I wanted a bit more as it could be tweaked and still be within spec.).

So, next week this will be accomplished, andI will move on for another 5-7 years.

I want to point out that I came very close to going with Hankook AH12 12R 22.5's, due to some very direct email feedback from a few owners of big DP's. One told me he had replaced his XZE's with these, and that he felt they handled better, were quieter and provided a nicer ride too. For sure, the price point was great on the Hankook's, and suspect they would have been fine.

Best to all, and I for one will be glad to stop talking about tires for awhile:)!
