Hey Rich,
Are you still towing the Excursion? Has there been any problems? How do you contend with the front end (manual hub locks turned all the way left, off)? Any other info on how you tow would be great.
I'm in the market for a 2001 to 2003 Affinity. Meanwhile, I've been getting prepped to flat tow my 2001 Ford Excursion 7.3L 4x4 behind the Affinity when I find it.
For anybody with an Excursion or 3/4 ton truck with a heavy duty winch bumper (winch bumper mounts to where tow bar base plate would mount, at least on the Fords, can't have both tow bar base plate and winch bumper), there is another option.
Blue Ox has adapters that go on the end of their tow bars and allow you to connect the tow bars directly to the D-ring shackles on your heavy duty bumper. I purchased the adapters (BX88303, these adapters fit the 3/4" plate of my D ring shackles and the 7/8" pins/holes in the shackles of the bumper I had made). My bumper builder also made the D-ring shackles extra long so they could pass through the front of the bumper and be welded both to the front of the bumper and on the inside of the bumper along a gusset for extra strength).
I attached 3 pics of the bumper. 2 show the Blue Ox adapters connected to the D-ring shackles of the bumper via the pins Blue Ox provides with the adapters. The 3rd shows the D-ring shackle welded on the inside of the bumper.
Blue Ox now has an updated 10k rated tow bar, the Avail BX7420.
It would be great to hear from others flat towing Excursions or other 3/4 or 1 ton trucks behind their rigs, both the good and the bad. I'm still a little nervous about towing the X....

Jerry, your first two pix are out of focus. I have been towing a 4x4 6.0 Excursion for 8 years with a Blue Ox Adventa and Remco. No problems. The Blue Ox has more slack in it that I like for some years.

Here's a pic of the bumper on another X. The adapters from Blue Ox will allow the tow bar to attach directly to the D ring shackles on the bumper (the D ring shackles are 3/4" steel plate with 7/8" pins/holes in them)
