What is the best brand of tire for a 1998 Country Coach Affinity 40 foot with slide? They're a lot of brands like Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Toyo, Hankook, Yokohama, Samson, Cooper. How is Bridgestone to Goodyear or Michelins?

Thank you in advance for all your help Tim

First, we have a 33' Allure with no tag.

we had Toyos originally. They were OK. They rode stiff and they had a bad smell.

we replaced them with B F Goodrich ST230's Load Range H at the advise of Pro Tire in Denton TX. B F Goodrich is owned by Michelin and the tires are made in the US. Pat at Pro Tire worked on Prevosts and recommended them because we wanted a good tire cheaper than Michelins. When Lonny told him we had Toyos, he said "you have a Country Coach don't you?" So he knew his business. We put 65,000 miles and 6 years on the B F Goodrich and were satisfied with them. They did have some cracking but we probably could have gotten another year out of them but Lonny had open heart surgery in January 2015 and before we went on our first long trip we wanted new tires. Didn't want his blood pressure to go up due to flat tire! The B F Goodrich rode much better than the Toyos in our opinion although they also rode "stiff".

Last year we decided to replace the BF Goodrich with Michelin XZA2 Energy tires and purchased them through the FMCA discount program. The Michelins ride much better than the B F Goodrich and the coach seems to handle better. Lonny used to work at Goodyear tires and is very picky about tires. He is a happy camper with the Michelins so I guess the higher price was worth it?? We all had to learn the hard way, with tire recalls and deadly accidents that Toyo tires were not a good match for CC motorhomes. That said they don't suffer from tire wall cracking as often as others. And because of the stiff side walls have the best steering response. Goodyear tires are known for edge wear and certain tires like the 670 just don't hold up that well whether used on motorhomes or especially on commercial buses. I have enjoyed my Continentals for both my 98 Allure and 2004 Intrigue, but had one go out round and had to replace it and its mate. I had one set of Michelins that gave the best ride and were very quiet as a highway model, but they failed prematurely with side wall cracking. I replaced them with new Continentals and Michelin does give the best ride and quietest ride. But I will make sure to cover them at every opportunity this time to prevent sun cracking. One of the Continentals that was on the front and rotated to the duals decided to go out of round. So it and it mate were replaced by Michelins and moved to the front last month. So if you ask me considering what I have owned, read, about and seen in service, I would say Michelin first with reservations, Bridgestone second, and definitely Firestone being the last. I've seen to many coaches with front end and rear end damage caused by exploding Firestone tires. But all that said, except for the Toyo and firestone, tire maintenance is the determining factor as to the long term performance of the tires you choose. Over the 55 years I have been very fortunate to have made friends with 3 different tire dealerships. And their advice has been essential in keeping me on the road. I have owned motor homes for 18 years, with an average of tire life of 3.6 years. But as I had the first set of Continentals 18 months before I traded the coach and assume they should have lasted another 3 years and expect m,ore life from remaining Continentals on my Intrigue, I would have a 5 year average. With that said the Toyo's gave me the longest service of any tire yet with my CC RV's.

Michelin has always given me the best service with the family vehicles, and the fleet vehicles we had at work. With Bridgestone, Goodyears , Continentals trailing far behind. And Here again Firestones were the worst OEM tires. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Greetings

I just had 6 Hankook 275/70R22.5 AH12 installed and love the ride. I trust my Tire company and they were highly recommended. Michelin is the understandable standard, and if you need to change tires every 7 years like I do Hankook looks really good.

The 275R70 22.5 was the size that gave CC all the fits. I must have had 4 telegrams telling me not to move the coach and make sure the tire pressure was up to 120 lbs. I've forgotten how many replacement Toyos I got after the first tread separation. I moved up to 275R 80's for a smoother ride and lower tire pressures. CC wasn't the only coach manufacturer who had trouble with that tire. Beaver comes to mind and they didn't use Toyo. Seems the size just didn't have the safety margin necessary. I would say Michelins. I currently have Michelins on the front and Continentals on the back to include the tags. Continentals on the back are on their third year and still good to go. Just replaced the Michelins on the front and they don't last much past 6.5 years but the ride and handling can't be beat. When the Michelins start to have small cracks you have to keep an eye on them almost daily. When I took mine off at 7 yrs the cracks got big very quick, but you can't see the inside of the tire where the damage was much worse. Michelins are more susceptible to sun damage because they use more natural rubber. Also, be careful with detailers some use gasoline to make the tires shine, not good.

When I bought our 97 Intrigue I put brand new Yokohamas 22.5 275s on the front and kept the 5 year old Bridgestone tires on the rear. We have been very happy with our Yokohamas over the last 3 years/ 25,000 miles and was going to replace the Bridgestone rears with the same Yokohamas but noticed from our last trip down to Flordia that the drivers side front has lost maybe a forth of an inch worth of tread in just one 3 inch section of the tire on either side of the tire. We did have our 7 year old Bridgestones inspected before the trip and new valve stems installed. Our Bridgestones were in perfect condition no cracks nor bulges. You seem to get what you pay for with tires. I am a firm believer of changing out your tires every 7 years no matter the condition but I'll admit it will hurt me a bit on the inside when I have to replace these Bridgestones and may run them a year longer. I have seen and heard great things about Michelins, great ride and they seem to take abuse well but have never had them on my personal Coach.

What has anyone cleaned the roof prior to applying paint ?

There is no "best" tire for Country Coaches in my opinion. But there are several very good answers. I have had our Country Coach for 6 1/2 years and we have had Michelin, Goodyear, Firestone, and Dunlop on this coach. They have all worked just fine with no blowouts. We did have a little excess sidewall cracking with Michelins that were made in Spain. On the other hand we had 4 drive Michelins made in the USA that showed no sidewall cracking at all after 6 1/2 years when I replaced them.

I just replaced two Goodyears that were our tag tires that aged out and were pretty worn. They were close to 8 years old and had no cracking at all on the sidewalls and no issues what so ever.

I have 4 Firestone tires on our drive tire now. They have been great tires. Made in the USA. Owned by Bridgestone. They were 27-28% less than Michelin when I bought them about 4 years ago. I did have one flat in one of them, but repaired it and it has been fine. Zero sidewall cracking. One poster in this thread made the comment about exploding Firestones. I think that is balderdash. He is thinking about the Explorer - Firestone issue 20 years ago. Firestone is a very popular tire on school buses around here and they don't put unsafe tires on school buses.

And like wise I had good results from my Dunlop steer tires. I bought those instead of Mich because they were 28% less.

In general Michelin and Goodyear cost the most. And those are excellent tires. Their companies engineer and build their tires in the USA where 90% of all coaches like ours reside. But they do cost the most. So maybe the best tire for you may be one that fits into your budget.

I have heard lots of good things about Hankook tires. They are made in Korea. This is a place with about zero RVs like ours. So what do the Hankook tire people know about making tires for big RV rigs. Nothing. Maybe big vehicles and cars, but not RVs. Lincoln sells Hankook as a premium tire on their cars. They have lots of cars in Korea so they likely know lots about making tires for them. (Likely very few Lincolns though).

I try and spend my money in this country as I live here.

First time post here but ling time MH owner. I would personally avoid Michelin until they fix their quality issues. I have sidewall cracking issues in tires that are 1 year old. 2005 and 2006 Affinity and Magna models that I have looked at had Toyo as original equipment and I have widespread availability here in the NW so that is probably what I would go with next. Lots of good choices out there, and I love the ride of the Michelins, but not again...

Hello everyone, fairly new here but would like to jump in here about this topic. I purchased a '09 Allure with tag about 8 months ago that had 29k miles and had the original Michelins. They looked like brand new tires!! No cracks and still had the nipples on them. After talking to Les Schwab in Junction City and was told the tires could start breaking down from the inside and wouldn't know it until a failure a occurred. So I replaced them with Toyos at about a 20% savings over Michelins, however, I was told later that some dealers would have given me a refund of about 150-200$ per tire. They would have sold the tires to a trucking company, is there any truth in this? They said they put them on the trailers.
The Toyos do ride a little stiff on the steers but handle well and are responsive compared to the Michelins so hoping they soften up a bit or will switch to a softer ride in the near future.

Redburn Tire bought back my two Continentals for retreading for $280.00 last month in Tucson, when I had the 2 XZA2 315 installed. don't have the Genie but do have some info about TracStar and a good installer.

Our satellite tech Dave at Sats2Go in Houston TX called us and said our TracStar dome satellite (original to our 2004 Allure) will soon be obsolete. He has one more software patch that will get us through about another year. We are headed that way to have him install a new satellite antenna (dome). Don't know what brand.

Dave is the best RV satellite tech. He has worked on our system 3x and has kept it going rather than try to sell us a new system. He knows how to add satellite TV in the bedroom without running new wires on the roof or in the AC ducts! He is fast, professsional and his prices are reasonable.

When we see him we stay at Rayford Crossing RV Resort in Spring TX (north of Houston) and he comes to us. We highly recommend Dave at Sats2Go for RV satellite stuff.

Thanks for the info about the Genie. We'll check into that when we visit Dave in a couple of weeks.

Our technician, Dave at Sats2Go in Houston TX said that TracStar is no longer going to be supported and will become obsolete within one year. People with Dish are already having problems.

Depending on the version of software you have you may have one more patch available that will give you up to one more year. After that you will need to purchase a new antenna.

We are going to replace our TracStar before that happens. We've been hearing that for a couple of years so we're not surprised.

We are already having issues with our TracStar taking a long time to lock on to the satellite and sometimes it gets a low signal a few times before it finally locks on and gets a strong signal. This has been happening for the last 3 months.

I talked to Sats2Go today. She said that Dish users are already having problems. Directv might be good for another year. They don't know. It's TracStar dome satellite that's the problem and the company who manufactured it is no longer doing RV satellite domes. There is only one last software patch available. She said it looks like we have the last patch but we are experiencing some problems locking on the satellite (not all the time). Seems more prevalent in the middle of the country rather than on the east coast. She said it seems that the problems started on the west coast and is moving east. anyway we decided to have them install a new antenna.
Just a basic dome, no in-motion and no HD.

We have an appointment on the 19th on our way back east from OK.

I decided that the swim system was not the best choice for my coach, my reasons are:

My 4 year old Directv dish would have to be updated for the swim system and I did not want a directv guy on top the coach, these guys normally work from a latter.

Also, to have a good experience with this system you need good internet with good speed.
What are the chances?

This system works really great for the house and Directv wants you to use the system because once installed you probably won't want any thing else.

When I told Directy that I wasn't going to switch to the swim system because I would not be able to switch the receivers to the coach, they offered me a deal.
They said I could keep any two of my current hd dvrs ( no lease) and use them on the coach and when not using the coach I could put those receivers on vacation hold at no charge.

If I ever sell the coach I can now just leave the receivers with the coach if I want.

To record 5 shows you will need a dish that locks onto all 5 sat's

I have the swim system at home and then I put two HD receivers in my coach which piggyback off my home system for minimal dollars you can't have two systems that are operating on Swim without paying full price for both everything works very well but I do miss the swim system when traveling

Jim,

That is not the case. Direct uses 3 sats and numerous channels on each.

Jim, All you need to convert your existing system to SWM is what's included in the link below. Also you will need a power inserter. Included a link for that also. And another link to how it's wired (Ignore everything except the blue and green lines). Easily done by a DIY'r. You're right you don't need internet.
However, if you want all the benefits that the genie grants like "on demand", "Pandora", streaming and so on, you do need internet to take full advantage of the system you're paying for.

the satellite companies are changing their systems and TracStar is out of business and no longer providing software updates to be able to talk to the satellite.

I am not the expert but I do know that DTV Swm and Genie are not the same thing.

I have direct TV in my coach and it utilizes the new SWM technology that allows for 2 signal feeds from the dish with only one cable to the box.

My house has a Genie System which allows multiple TVs in different rooms to have their own channel utilizing wireless technology. Neither system requires an internet connection unless you are wanting to download material from the internet.

I travel for as long as one year at a time and have Hd directv at home (Swim System) for my Kids who live at home. I then pay for 2 more HD receivers (not Swim) which are HR24 HD receivers I put in the Coach. In other words it is the cheapest way to. Would love to have the SWIM system in the Coach, however Directv doesn't allow for 2 SWIM systems. What I have works OK. Don't want to get carried away with goobldegosh, but am open to a simple way to add the SWIM system to my Coach.

Daniel,

Glad to find someone who has used both DirecTV's SWM and Genie. At home we are configured with 2 DirecTV DVRs and two regular receivers (all HD). We are pleased with the system's performance (fast forward, pause, reverse, etc) when watching a recorded show using the DVR connected to the TV we are watching.

But (via SWM) when we access a recorded show on the other DVR in the home from the same TV, fast forward, pause, reverse, etc are all sluggish when skipping over the commercials (because, I presume, one DVR has to "talk" to the second DVR to position the recording and get the picture back to the first DVR and on to the TV).

How is the technology different with Genie? Is there any performance difference in skipping forward, backward, etc at a TV connected to a Genie box (which has to access the programs on the first, usually only, DVR) vs at the main TV connected directly to that DVR?
