I have the same problem occasionally.
Just today, the step wouldn't retract. I stopped at the rest area and cleaned the ground connection and nothing seemed to work. Went down the road and it retracted on its own, then extended again later. A bit further and it retracted and stayed that way for the rest of the trip. It seems to be working as it should now after we arrived at our night's stop. I cleaned the contacts in the door and hope all is well tomorrow.
Couldn't see anything apparent while under the steps.
To your concern, I've received the warning a few times in the past and the steps were not extended. Never could figure out the reason. Perhaps cleaning the contacts helped?

You folks likely have a broken wire in the harness that goes from the door thru the door jam. Had that issue with exact same symptoms. Kevin Waite has the harnesses and can fix you up.

Mine is working fine again after I cleaned the ground wire and cleaned the contacts in the door. Might have a loose wire, but appears to have just been a dirty contact in my case.
