I usually use the electric water heater and at this time of year no gas heat, so the Hydro Hot has been inactive about 6 months. I fired it up today, just running the hot water heater, and it was pretty smokey and smelly. I can't run it like that in a campsite next to a neighbor. I was thinking of running it as I drive down the road to see if it cleans up after some use. I just had the burner tip replaced and the unit serviced about 6 months ago. What causes the smoke and soot? Perhaps there is not enough load just running the water heater? The exhaust was clean about 6 months ago when I was using gas heat in the coach. Any ideas how to clean it up?

Most everything I have read about the Hydro Hot and Aqua Hot units is that if you don't run them (including the burner), you will have problems. Roger Berke is considered an expert on them and he says when he sets up his coach, both the electric element and the burner is turned on.
Did the annual service include a good cleaning of the combustion chamber?

Roger helped me with my burner issues and he is great. I experienced the same thing and once it ran a bit it got hot and burned off all the crap. Let it burn a few cycles and if it doesn't clear up then look into it more. Speaking of which, I need to cycle mine even though it is summer...

I don't know if the tech cleaned the combustion chamber. I know he replaced the burner tip and fuel filter. I also saw him run it on gas heat and it was clean, zero smoke, clear exhaust. Since then, it has just been sitting, no use. Sounds like I need to run it some. Difficult to do in the summer time... I guess I will just run the water heater as I drive down the road, hope a cop doesn't pull me over...

Another thing about the Hydro Hot is to run the burner and circulate the fluids through the heat registers. If you don't the fluid will turn into mud!! I just rebuilt my hydro hot and flushed all of the boiler fluid out with distilled water and it was like mud! I just purchased the coach about 8 months ago and it is in absolutely beautiful shape but I don't think the heater has ever circulated the fluids in the heating system. Just a thought if your in the process of learning the system!

Hydro Hot is def finicky.
I was told by factory techs to , at the very least, turn it to diesel once a month to keep orifice clear. Plus, keep up annual maintenance.

I guess all these boilers are about the same, and on tne instructions for my Webasto it say's that the unit MUST be run for ten minutes every month.

Dennis is right. I have a very high-tech guy with aqua hot and He suggests I run almost complete distilled water and use the site glass for installing the minimum amount of boiler antifreeze. I also found out by doing that my hot water is almost instantaneous where were the heavy concentration of antifreeze it was much lower aquahot needs to be flushed out and the fluid replaced about every 3 or 4 years to maintain cleanliness out of the system
