Just purchased a Wrangler Unlimited. I've set up a number of vehicles for towing. Looked at Blue Ox website the tow plate looks straight forward mounting. I used a separate bulb in the tail light when I set up the Envoy. When checking with a local store selling hardware, he there is not enough room in the tail light for a separate bulb. Just got it yesterday so haven't had a chance to look. Has anyone used a separate bulb of did you need to use diodes??

We used diodes, had it done professionally. Used an Intellibrake braking system. Had it for just over a year now and about 15,000 towed miles. We used Blue Ox because we have a modified Jeep with a winch (AEV JK350 modifications) and Blue Ox has a specific tow plate. Been very happy with the set up so far. We'll be towing later today!

I have a 16 Wrangler and used a wiring system for JKU's Go to the wrangler forum and they have all the info there. I can't remember the one I used but it is listed there. Very simple to install. Probably easier than the additional bulb.

I ran into the same problem with a friend's 2012 Wrangler and with my 2005 Liberty, no space for additional bulbs in the housings (or at the very least it would have been a tight fit). We ended up using a diode kit for both. I did the work myself, it is pretty straightforward (but I do have professional automotive mechanical experience).
BTW I have an extra Blue Ox universal kit that includes both the diode setup and the separate bulb parts, it can be installed either way. It is new/complete/unused with all parts. It is basically a combination of a BX8848 and a BX8869 that came with a BX88231 complete towing "kit" that a friend bought and we did not use. If you are interested it is available for sale, cheaper than a new kit ;-)

We have a 2011 Wrangler we bought as a used tow'd, and it was wired with separate bulbs when we bought it. I have wired many vehicles with diodes, but this seems simpler.

I used a Cool Tech wiring harness on my 1016 JKR...http://www.cooltechllc.com/wrangler-parts-accessories/54-jk-tow-harness-deluxe-kit.html

We have a 2011 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and I used a separate bulb in each taillight assembly and there was room. I think that Jeep is still using the same taillight assembly in the later models. If my memory serves me correctly, there was a YouTube video showing the process. I was able to fish the wire harness from front to rear through the hollow main chassis frame.

I use wireless tail lights from Pep Boys. Simple and easy way to go.

I appreciate everyone's response. Quickly read them, have interest and maybe some questions. At the moment I'm swamped, need to get the Wrangler registered in Texas, get our other vehicle repaired, take a vehicle to El Paso to get it safety inspected, put running boards on the Sport and go see Jason Borne among other things. Give me about a week and I may be back to normal (whatever that is).. Did learn something interesting. Bought the Wrangler in Phoenix after the one in Tucson fell through (had it purchased)..Bought a vehicle in AZ 10 years ago both of those transactions I paid State sales tax plus city and county where we purchased. This on didn't have to pay city and county, just TX state sales tax, save me about $750. Guy at auto nation know how to do it, confirmed with DMV in TX. Thanks. Trying to get back on the road next month and my "to do" list keep growing!!

The "No State Tax" was bogus. Asked him and the finance guy several times about it, said they know what they were doing. I'm sure it was a ploy, suspected from beginning. Even with the BS it was the best deal. Would have bought the vehicle even if he was honest with me. Car salesmen just won't change.

He knew how to do it so you didn't pay AZ taxes but clueless about your state.
