Some of my CC friends use Hwy 84 for a good part of the trip, mostly 4-lane, they love it, going Santa Fe - Birmingham. Check out detail at the Country Coach International Facebook page.

We came across 40 this Spring. It's one of the worst Interstates we've been on. Won't make that mistake again.

Lee, you are right about the US highways being generally good.
This year we left late for Santa Fe late so we took I 40 west from Memphis to Clines' Corner east of ABQ. The road surface is okay and we had no issues other than wind.
We came back to Birmingham on US 82 from Lubbock Tuscaloosa. Roads were generally good though only okay in much of Arkansas and a little bit of TX. Otherwise mostly 4 lane in TX, MS and AL.
A few years ago we took US 84 as Lee describes. Like US 82 it is mostly good with the exception of the easternmost 20 miles in TX.
Each of these routes is four 6 hour days for me.
