I've had several Clamp on amp meters over the years one costing in the $400 range, they are extremely handy especially for a MH'er. Bought one at a rally in Phoenix several year ago that's very good, think I paid around $80 doe it. Did a google search and found it, well worth the $$.

ELIKE 328D 600A ACA/DCA Auto-Ranging 3999 Digital Clamp On Meter & Multimeter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELIKE-328D-600A-ACA-DCA-Auto-Ranging-3999-Digital-Clamp-On-Meter-Multimeter-/222170452303)

Ebay wants about $75 for it. They make better ones but this is good enough for what I do now. Measured it against my shunt meter and it's close enough. I've been looking at a Fluke AC/DC RMS meter but can't justify the $$ (or at least my wife can't).

I guess if you keep looking you can always find something cheaper.

The issue then becomes as to how Accurate the device and how well will it hold up. I have had triplet, Hewlett-packard, Tektronix, Fluke, etc etc. pieces all fail. But I could always trust HP, TEK, FlUKE and Triplett to be accurate beyond my standards and when repaired to work like new,

Pieces I bought from Sears, Craftsman, and Harbor Freight turned out to be a bad mistake. One meter I bought from Sears said the line Frequency was 48. 2 hz, while the Harbor Freight were further off. We all know line frequency is 60.00 hz give or take a hair. When I kook the meter back the sales man grabbed 4 more and we checked all of them and they were bad, too. Eventually when I saw him a few weeks later every meter in El paso's two stores were returned as defective. This was back in the late 80's as I remember.
