We have a tear in one of our Zip-Dee slide-topper awnings and I would like to try to repair it for now rather than replacing it. I saw that Camping World carries CAMCO awning repair tape and the product description makes it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. But then you read the reviews of the product online and most of those reviews say that it sucks, peels off in hours or days, and is a waste of time and money.

Some of those reviews say that they had better luck with Duct Tape (disregarding appearance). One even mentioned using Gorilla Tape which is like Duct Tape except from my experience in other applications it is stickier.

I would like to hear from anyone who has repaired an awning or slide-topper with tape. Other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks, Steve B

Haven't done this, but I have quite a bit of experience with repairing things with Gorilla tape. It will most likely do the job, but asking any tape to hold something like a torn awning together is a stretch. I would sew the tear up with very sturdy thread - probably would use dental floss as it's very strong - using a "baseball" stitch, and then cover the repair with the Gorilla tape on the top surface only. I would expect that to be good for quite some time.

Steve:

I had a tear in a slide topper and used Duck Tape in a matching color. I patched both sides of the topper. It lasted 2 years before I changed out the toppers.

I used some Sail Tape from West Marine on our awning about 6 years ago. Still holding things together.

I have definitely had no luck with the clear awning repair tapes, even the one made for "sail" cloth. The gorilla tape has done best, and even it doesn't always stick! Good luck!

Make sure you check with your RV insurance company, some not all cover the cost of repair or replacement of your awnings. Mine were covered.
