We're heading from Phoenix, AZ to Bend, OR in mid-March. Any route suggestions, route sections to avoid. Weather considerations?

I 5 most of the way and take off at Weed, CA. Bend is under tons of snow right now so wait until the weather is better .

If there is a late winter be prepared to use HWY 101 and HWY 1 to Florence and then head east thru Eugene to Bend. But if we have a warm Spring if you watch the weather you can almost choose any route. The fastest way is to Head west on I40, pick up I-5, and if lucky when you get to Weed, Ca. branch off and head directly to Bend. But you'll be driving a bunch of secondary roads, So keep your eyes pealed. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Keep a close check on the weather. It took us 12 hours to go from Central Nevada to the Oregon Coast this week. This has been a wetter and stormier winter. Google Crater Lake to see the recent snow in that area. I am hoping that March will show a break. Portland, OR had about a foot of snow a couple of days ago and completely shut down. Bend is in the iffy weather area. It could be beautiful and fair and easy travel of blizzard, cold and white out. Check the weather.

Lee,
As noted you must keep a very close eye on the weather. That being said, If you looking for a great route with great scenery, I try to choose highways that give me two headings. I would travel north on US 93 Peoria to Kingman, continue on US 93 to Vegas. Take US 95 north out of Vegas to Tonopah, Hawthorne, to Schurz. Alt US 395 to Yarington, Fernley. Then I-80 to Reno then US 395 north to Alturas. Then SR 39, 139 to Kalamath Falls. Finally US 97 to Bend.
Fuel in Tonopah, Fernley, K. Kalls,
This route is ONLY for good weather.

I agree with Micheal's comments. If the weather is good this is a very nice route.

Thanks to all for the great route suggestions. Your weather warnings are well taken, and will dictate the route.
I will follow your good counsel.
Hoping March weather is kind . . .

If you that the I-10 to the 5 and up to Weed advise you take the 210 in Redlands that will bypass all the traffic in the LA area. The 210 will intersect the 5 above Silmar

I have a co-worker in Bend and he said yesterday the 2 wheel drive car hasn't left the garage for several weeks and the 4X4 hasn't been out of 4 wheel for same time! They are getting blanketed right now.
BTW we have done 95 north from above Tonapah NV to the 80 several times even in winter and not bad. We are coming from So Cal so cut over at Bishop. 395 is pretty but gets a lot higher shortly after Bishop, on the way to Mammoth.

Coming through Redlands the highway will be marked CA 30 and CA210, in about San Dimas it changes to I210 and when you get near the Rose Bowl it separates and goes out through La Canada and up to Sylmar just below the CA14. If you do not take the off-ramp you will be on the 134 over to Burbank.

I'm pretty sure it's now marked as I-210 at the Redlands interchange.

Nope it is CA210 from Pomona, ca57 interchange, to Redlands I10 interchange. Feds wouldn't pay even though it has always been marked metropolitan bypass.

Well I'll be damned, I was incorrect and I live about 3 miles from that interchange LOL...guess I better start driving with my eyes open!

Lol we assume I don't know how long I had used that loop before realizing the change. Only saw one sign first time I noticed and thought it was wrong.

An alternative route to avoid most of the downtown freeway traffic in Las Vegas would be to take Blue Diamond over to Pahrump and from Pahrump cut across to 95. We usually fuel at the Space Station(?) fuels station and brothel just north of where the road from Pahrump intersects with 95. Take 95 to Hawthorne and Schurz. At Schurz instead of taking the alternate 95 to Yerington, continue on 95 to Fallon and on to Fernley. PM us and if we are in Nevada and you come through Fallon we can make arrangements to meet and catch up on news.

We have made this trip many times. My favorite route is to stay on 395 through Lakeview to the Silver Lake Cutoff (Or 31), to LaPine, then US97 to Bend.
