After years of thinking, learning, and more thinking, wife finally said she's ready to do the RV thing full-time.
Therefore, I need to get serious about making that happen in a logical order, and I need professional advice about timing and executing the following: purchase of RV, establishing domicile outside MD, selling or renting our house, etc.
My hope is that some of you have used professionals who know about these issues, and who are worthy of your recommendation.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.

As far as a domicile, check out The Escapees RV Club. They have an excellent program to set up a permanent address in Texas and have a great mail forwarding program. You will need to get a TX drivers license

We are going Sept 25 to Sevierville, TN to a seminar put on by RV Dreamers about full timing. Howard and Linda have been FT for quite awhile. Go to RV-Dreamers.com (http://RV-Dreamers.com) and you can see their schedule of future seminars as well as the content of the program.
We have the CC and are looking to see if this for us.

Your choice of domicile is complex, and typically depends on taxes: income taxes determined in part on your sources of income; estate taxes; motorhome registration taxes and fees; liability and health insurance availability and cost; politics and the ability to vote, and other factors. I don't know that there is any single "expert" that can help. There are many that can advise on specific concerns. There is a pretty good book out on choosing a domicile. Damned if I can remember the title or find my copy.
We went through the process five years ago.

The Escapees magazine has been offering quite a few articles in recent issues about the matter of changing one's domicile. From my reading, it can be quite complicated. In the current issue, the matter of retaining ownership of a house in a state other than the one in which you wish to be "domiciled" can itself cause complications. As I recall, the columns have been written by an attorney who herself is domiciled in Texas (not that I am in the least suggesting Texas as a place worthy of one's domicile). (BTW, Texas is a state where one can apparently openly carry a loaded gun in his auto but must carry his prescription medications in their original containers rather than in a weekly pill box).
I have also read that one of the Dakotas (South?) is also a favorable location for relocated domiciles. The whole issue requires very careful thought.
I suggest you join Escapees www.escapees.com> and try to arrange for some of these recent issues that have covered this topic. And it's a useful organization, too.
Good luck,
Ken

That could be a problem for more than registration as where you bank can be used to determine residency. Since high tax states don't like losing their tax base they are being more diligent in tracking down people dodging the tax.

Maryland gov web site says one of the factors is amount of time spent in state, check it to verify but I believe it states you must be out of state 183 days per year or Md officials will consider you to be a Md resident for state income tax purposes. You can own homes in multiple states but you will be a legal resident in only one of those states, picked by you, but you must not violate a rule that could open up a legal challenge by a tax hungry state.

Don't think where you bank is really a factor since one can use many banks that have no presence in the majority of states, maybe you meant to saying the address your bank has on file for you. More important is where your drivers licenses is issued, where you are registered to vote and the address you use for your federal tax return.

When we full timed we used Escapees mail service in Livingston, TX. They did an exceptional job. They held mail for the period of time we requested, forwarded wherever and wherever we asked by whatever mail service we requested.. They would review what they were holding with us by phone and actually read something to us if requested.
That also allowed us to domicile in Texas where there is no state income tax, and register our vehicles there at reasonable prices. All states have different ways of getting their revenue. Texas makes its tax money on personal property taxes which works very well for full timers.
In all the years we used them we never had any problems. That may be because a number of the folks that worked there were RV'er taking a break from the road.
Good luck if you decide to hit the road full time. We both found it to be the freest time we have ever experienced. We saw all 48 states, most of Canada ( except Manitoba and Saskatchewan) including all of the maritimes and northern Mexico. Pretty sure I would skip Mexico now days due to the narco issues but some folks seem to do it safely.

I owned a house in NC and had some property in Fl. Claimed Fl as I was in NC less than the 180 days or so requirement to be considered a resident. However after 2yrs and checking around for my situation it was cheaper to change everything over to NC, initial cost to change over was high, but now my insurance is a quarter of what I was paying in FL. If thinking about making FL your residency, check different counties as the cost can fluctuate more than double just for insurance not to mention taxes.

My home address is and has been in Emery, South Dakota for the past 10 or so years. My driver's license is from there, I'm registered to vote there, file my fed income tax return using that address, have a bank there (along with other places) and travel there occasionally. I have lived full time in my RV the entire time. None the less, I recently applied for an account at a new brokerage firm as I wanted to change my stock broker. It appears they have turned me down as I use a mail forwarding service as my home address. Fed law they say, or some such thing. Meantime all my other accounts are fine with it. Go figure!

My understanding is that escapees has and arrangement in South Dakota where they provide a mail forwarding mail box as well as well as a fixed physical address which eliminates the issue you have raised. They have this in Texas as well.
