I have a 1995 40' Affinity Cat 3176B 89,000 miles that I have owned for the last 9000 miles and it has started and run perfect until the other morning when I was getting ready for a trip. It was a cool morning about 40F, 30f low over nite, so I switched the block heater on and 45 min. later started the motor, I noticed approx 5 to 8 second extended crank time be fore the engine started ran a little ruff for a few seconds than smoothed out and ran at a high idle for 20 min. In the past the engine always started within 2 0r 3 seconds and smooth. about 2 hours later went to start our trip and the engine would crank and spin normal but would not start I tried this about 7 or 8 times 10 to 15 seconds crank with 2 min rest, no misfire or smoke just crank and spin.

Fuel tank was full and fresh, the generator running on the same tank started and ran normal. The motor had a complete service with all new filters 600 miles ago.

Looking for any advice that may help me get her running again.

Thanks

Maybe gelled fuel. Get some Howe's fuel additive, although it might be a bit tricky at this point unless it warms up.

It's a cat, pump up the fuel filters with the pump on the fuel filter housing. Lots of times an o ring dries and let's air in the fuel system, the pump itself goes bad a let's air in other time easy replace by removing two bolts.

I agree with Robert. Same thing happened to me last week. Temps about the same but a bit cooler. Gen set ran, engine would not start. Primed the fuel line, she started. Gen set running tells me it's not fuel gelling.

Sounds like no fuel getting to the engine, which would normally be clogged filter. I'd be on the phone to Cat asap. Be sure you've got your engine serial # handy...

Update on Cat 3176B no start. Mobile service call results. Batteries tested good with hydrometer, battery cables cleaned still no start, tenp 40f block heater on for 1 hour, still no start. Jumped the bus with Duramax pickup and started after 6 or 7 second crank, let run at fast idle for 20 min turned off motor and restarted without jump assist imeadeatly, turned off motor and let sit for 20 minutes no start.

Do I buy new batteries or does it sound like a fuel problem?

Thanks

Have you considered that you may need a new starter? I did after this happened to me two years ago!

When you say no start, does it turn over and not start or does it not even turn over?

If it starts with a jump it's not fuel. Suggest testing batteries with load tester.

Sounds like your batteries are very weak, I would replace them with Lifeline starting AGM's

It turns over at a good rate but doesn't start.

I thought about the starter, but would jumping help the starter if it was weak?

Thanks

But you said it starts when jumped, correect? If so it is either a bad connection or bad batteries.

The last email said it does not turn over? I'm confused now. If it turns over but does not start and it does start when jumped, it is either batteries or a bad connection

Yes it starts when jumped, it also starts if shut down and restarted with in 30 seconds without a jump but won't start 20 min later unless it's jumped.

thanks

Cat 3176B no start SOLVED.
Two new 8D batteries and she starts fine. The old batteries cranked the motor fine with no struggle or hesitation, but aparently with less rpm than needed.

Thanks everyone
