Tag axle failure, chapter II:

I posted in Dec about the broken tag axle bracket that very nearly cost me a tire and a major mechanical disaster. Caught that just in time and had it "patched up" at a truck shop in Willits Ca where we discovered it. Was expecting to get it fixed at Henderson's Line-Up in Grants Pass OR on the way home, and stopped there to do that today.

Well - 'fraid not. The good folks at Henderson's spent a couple hours looking at it, scratching their heads over what might have caused it, and sent me away because their proposed fix involves bending the bugger back into shape, and their equipment is way to small to handle that job. They did manage to bring it back "nearly" into alignment, and that should pretty well cut any tire wear to a minor issue. But it's not fixed...

So: The Hutch will get a new pair of tires here in Eugene, so I no longer worry about rolling on the "slick" that resulted from dragging one tag tire for a few hundred miles in Dec. But the final solution remains to be determined. Guess I'll be researching frame shops in the Seattle area when we got home next week.

The Adventure continues! Will post more when I know more. Meantime, any/all advice and thoughts will be gratefully received!

Don, we had the same problem. Our 2008 allure 31619. Frieghtliner in sacramento raised it all up. Took things apart and straighten it all. Was a 3 day job. Was able to get it back together streight. Been two years, like you purchased new tries all the way around. No signs of uneven wear so guessing they did it right. Could of been a real bad day. The right side tag tire was down to the cords.

Don

Have you talked to Kaiser Brake and Alignment in Eugene. They used to do a lot of work for Country Coach and have a good reputation.

Thanks for that, Mike. That pretty much goes along with what Henderson's is telling me. I'll be looking into truck frame shops around home in a week or so.

FWIW, They say that is why Prevost and MCI either sets the tag wheels in or makes them steerible.I wanted to find spacers to bring my tag wheels out even with my out side duels because I think it looks so much better but the consensus was that the tags really take a beating when they are mounted like CC and Blue Bird does theirs .

I second the suggestion to go to Kaiser in Eugene. Our drive axle was 1.5" out of alignment from the factory and Kaiser modified the frame attachment to fix.it. Going strong after 85000 miles. They also changed the toe-in from factory specs to improve tracking.

Thanks Dan,

Several folks have recommended Kaiser. I talked to them today, and will take the rig there this Spring to get it sorted out. They're quite sure they can do it, and Jim Cooley, formerly at OMC and now Service Mgr at Premier RV in Junction City, agrees that they are the right folks to do it.

Thanks to you and the others who steered me there!

Interesting, Yuell.

On my '08 CC, the tags ARE set in a couple of inches from the outer drives. Seems logical to me, but sure didn't help keep this bugger from breaking its hanger bracket. CC did things differently as time went on. For example: the tag hanger bracket on the '08-09 CCs is very different from the 07 and previous. So no doubt they changed the rear axle setup in '08. You can see ALL the changes at damonrapozo.com/model_history. He's compiled a comprehensive history of CC production. His records can be very useful.

Latest update on my infamous tag axle fail:

Talked to Kaiser Alignment in Eugene today. They are very familiar with this problem (yes - it seems it endemic to '08 and later CCs). They are confident they can sort it out. Also discussed this with my go-to guy here in Junction City, Jim Cooley - formerly of OMC, not service manager at premier RV in J.C, where I bought my rig 2 years ago. Jim agreed that Kaiser is the place to go. So: I'll be taking it there later this Spring to sort this out. Will report back on the resolution once it's done.
