I see that basically every camper, coach etc, has fans in the roof. Most of them have a plastic shroud mounted on the roof. To me, it would seem they can run a fan while driving?

On my coach, there are no "plastic shroud" things to cover the trap door that raises when I turn on the fan. I feel stupid not knowing why, but my desire to know all about my coach, and the fact that I wont see any of you chuckling allows me to ask the question anyway. :)

I guess in a round about way, I want to know if I can run the fan while driving.

By the way, finishing my last camping trip of the season. Was in Pensacola area during hurricane Michael. Thankfully, no damage, but feeling bad for those east of where I was.

After watching an "RVGeeks" you tube video regarding those shrouds I bought 2 for my fantastic vents... very happy with them. Picked them up at a camping world. Without the shroud the vent lid would close automatically when it rains. Either that or the lid vent lid can be manually stopped from closing during a rain, but then water comes in. Having the shroud allows the vent to remain wide open even during a heaven rain. Early on I was a little concerned how the shroud would fare in a heavy wind, but I've been through some tremendous side winds without any issue. Somewhere along the line I watched a YouTube (produced by the fantastic manufacturer I believe) saying it was fine to travel with the fan open and operating, just recommended having it fully open.

We run with the fantastic vent open often, easy for wife to close if gets too hot. We use it at times with the dash air, helps sucks heat out. Have left bedroom vent open too when we don't expect to need to close it.
Many years ago when vans were the rage all we had was the vent no covers available. 65k on one van and 45k on the other with no issue.

We added vent shrouds a few years ago when I discovered that the rain sensor hadn't closed an open vent during rain. Since then our vents are open most of the time, even during travel, with very good results. I highly recommend adding them to any coach to enjoy more dynamic air movement while driving, and the peace of mind that rain is no longer a concern. Safe travels.

I will definitely be adding them. Thanks everyone for the tips.

Another benefit to the lid covers, is they are a bit more robust. I've been in hail that was strong enough that many around me had their Fantastic Fans Lids damaged. So far, the covers have held up well. (And suspect a a grapefruit size hunk fell on it - well, I'd be replacing it:)!

We did just replace our rear Fantastic Fan last year. (Had repaired the same fan twice, with good support by Fantastic Fan. The last time when they helped me review my problem, we got to a higher enough cost parts list - that I decided to just replace it.). I went with the MaxxFan Deluxe Remote Control for this unit. The cover fro the Fantastic Fan, was high enough it would sometimes shad one of my solar panels. The MaxxFan has a lower profile when the fan is in the closed mode. So far I like it. Like the reverse feature, so can pull cool air in at night. It seems quieter then the Fantastic Fans we had, which were variable thermostat control models in my era. I do feel that the software on the Remote and MaxxFan operation - is easily confused. Can't just turn off the fan, have to close it to power the fan off, then re-open the lid if you want it up without the fan on. (Do not believe it supposed to need to close/open the fan, to just shut off the fan itself. Some gremlin is in the mix. I'll call MaxxFan tech support in the future, to see if something is not wired correctly...).

And I do realize that Fantastic Fan does have newer products available too. But none were low profile, so that's why MaxxFan got the nod:)!

Best to all,
Smitty
