Our Dometic NDR 1292 refrigerator cooling unit has apparently failed -- after 16+ years of reliable service. I've come across a replacement cooling unit that essentially converts the existing Dometic cabinet to a residential refrigerator. It replaces the entire absorption system with a 110-120V electric compressor and cooling coils -- no more LP.

Unit appears to be branded "Dutch Aire" -- same company that manufactures the well known "Amish" replacement dual-mode cooling units??

The specs say is only requires 0.8A during operation and will run off a with 600W inverter (does not require pure sine wave). The system also comes in a 12-24V (5.5A) version.

Some things I like: no more concerns about leveling, no need to remove windshield to remove/replace old cabinet, no cabinet remodeling needed, relatively inexpensive ($895 + shipping + installation)..

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of or experience with this system.

I have heard of a lot of good things about Dutch Aire. I also was in on similar thread on irv2 about this. I like our fridge and if this was my choice I would do this conversion or the new lp-elec unit with helium or what ever gas isn't flammable. Good company from all people who have dealt with them.

Sounds interesting! Let us know what you conclude. My 1492 is still going but who knows when...

The Dutch Air website does not show this conversion device in their product pages. Any other source information available?

I'm not finding much online information. JC Refrigeration has a little:

https://jc-refrigeration.com/videos/ (https://jc-refrigeration.com/videos/)

and there's a recent YouTube video with lots of valuable comments from viewers (ugly link, I know!):

PM from factory (JC Refrigeration) indicates the cost for the Dometic NDR 1292 110-120V AC version is about $900 + shipping + install (3-4 hours?). Shipping is ~$200; factory install (at Shipshewana, IN) is available for ~$400. The 12-24V DC verison is about $1000.

Three year warranty and optional to buy a three year extension for $125.

FWIW, I had my "dangerous" but operating Dometic replaced prophylactically with the Dutch Aire, which promptly failed after two years. Now we are back to a much newer Dometic, which is doing just fine. YMMV.

I called JC Refer and they have the conversion unit for New Dimension 1492 for 899 for 120v model and 999 for the 12 volt model. $300 to install at their facility. It does not show up on website. They are updating the site. 2-3 weeks lead time for install lead time,.
