Greetings, I'm so pleased to be able to get your help. When I start my generator while the Cat 3176B is running the tachometer drops to zero and sometimes I get a comment from the overhead speaker stating "Warning alternator failure" If I go to the main breaker box in the bedroom and switch off the converter breaker the tachometer resumes it's normal operation and the alternator warning goes away.
Just wondering if anybody has had this problem and how to go about fixing it.
Thanks

Sounds normal, your tach is driven off the alternator and because you have the generator running the battery charger is supplying charge to the batteries and thus the alternator shuts off charging, which in turn drops out the tach. Try turning on the lights including the headlights and see if that keeps the alt on.

The generator battery charging circuit is fighting the the engine alternator. Usually turning on the lights will stop it. You can also install a diode to prevent the engine alternator from seeing the generator output.

Thanks for the help Mike. Do you have any information on where and how to install the diode? From memory I didn't have this problem until the alternator was rebuilt. I will try the lights and if that works that's fin with me.
