Title: Identifying model of Allison Transmission
Post by: Cooper1951 on January 21, 2020, 07:39:33 pm
I recently purchased a 2002 CC Magna 42 with C12 425hp cat engine.  I have been trying to find out if it has the Allison 3000 or 4000 transmission.  My service adviser tells me its a 4000, yet when they changed the transmission fluid and filters it only required 5 gallons of fluid. The fluid change for a 4000 is $200 more than for a 3000, so I want to know. It has the dual filters and 2 inch sump. Can anyone answer this for me?

The 2002 Magna came with the 4000 series Allison transmission.  My 2000 Magna with CAT C-10 has the 4060 Allison.

Thank you for your response. Any idea why it only required 5 gallons of trans. fluid? the 4000, I believe holds 10 gal.

No idea.  Perhaps another will chime in here and help.

You have the MH4000 transmission. That should require 31 quarts for a refill according to the Allisson manual.

I can't answer your question.  I do know that not all of the fluid is drained out when a fluid change is done.  My 4000 series took 8 gallons to refill after changing the fluid.

One thing that may be making a difference is if you have a shallow sump or a deep sump.

The shallow one is maybe 2" deep and deep sump is at least 4.  AFAIK the shallow sump uses 4" long filters and deep sump are approx 6" long so that may be a way to check on which you have.  You can also just look at where the oil pan bolts up to the transmission and see how much is hanging down.

If you have your serial number you can go to My Transmission (https://www.allisontransmission.com/parts-service/my-transmission) and enter it and it will tell you what you have.

X2  That's what my manual says and what our MH4000 with 2 inch sump, takes.  The 4 inch sump MH400 takes 39 quarts according to the same manual.  Add another 3 quarts if the transmission is equipped with the optional PTO.

Regardless of the volume of fluids...  Looks like the C-12 with 425 trim, comes with 1550 pounds of Torque. So Allison 4000:)!

Best to you,
