Title: Dometic Refrigerator Ammonia Leak
Post by: stevebufty on September 06, 2021, 02:21:40 pm
2002 Intrigue 36-foot #11382
Anybody successfully repair or replace a Dometic Elite RM1272 side-by-side propane/electric refrigerator? Experiencing a strong pungent ammonia smell in the refrigerator compartment. Any recommended repair facilities for this particular problem in the southern California area or beyond?
Thanks, Steve B

Steve, there are some after market cooling units available but from what I have read, it is hit or miss on their reliability. We chose to go the residential route as it was cheaper than replacing the cooling unit and for sure buying another Dometic.

We did the same as Don S.; we switched to a residential Samsung RF18 and modified the opening to fit. However, if you want to keep your current refrigerator then JC Refrigeration (Home | JC Refrigeration (http://jc-refrigeration.com/#)) is a popular choice for a replacement cooling unit (either gas/electric or 12v/120v). Don't delay, as a refrigerator leaking ammonia is dangerous.

Steve,

We have the same unit in our '01 intrigue, and converted it with an HVAC unit from JC Refrigeration in Shipshiwana, Indiana. Best thing we ever did. The install could be DIY as they have great instructions, but we had ours done since we were in the area.  We are overnighting in Sterling, CO. It's 95 outside and the fridge is 35 and the freezer is 2.

Thank you Don ... I will try to call you to chat about your conversion to HVAC. That's the way I'm leaning.
