Title: how do I know if my fan is working correctly?
Post by: journeyman on August 15, 2023, 01:50:27 pm
I've been told that the radiator fan on my Intrigue uses about 40 HP of engine power at full usage.
A 40HP fan should be REALLY loud (almost like jet engine loud).

i do not hear the fan over the engine noise.
How do I know if the fan is working correctly?
error codes? something else?
Is there any way to monitor the fan to see if it is working correctly?

Thanks in advance.

Bernie,

We have an '01 Intrigue #11238 which we bought new and have had the same questions.  If yours has not been modified, if would still have the Sauer Danfoss controller?  If you unplug the power to it, the fan will default to full RPM.

After replacing several S-D controllers, I finally installed a wax valve. It's a much better solution.

If you want to talk about the issue, call me:  562-743-6858

I'm not sure if it is original or modified. Not even sure how to tell.

Anyone have any pics of what I should look for?

SD ECM Fan controller on a 400ISL. 2007 vintage.  2001 would be similar - except has a 6 wire connector vs the 3 wire

EDIT: located on back end of cooling package.

Your fan should be turning idle, just look and see if turning.  If fan is running on high it will be loud not jet engine loud but more like whooosh. Loud.  Fan running on high will be using hp and if running on high all the time look at wax valve setup.  When silver leaf shows  195 temp just pull over leave Coach running and go listen to fan.
Fan speed on high will be about 2800 rpm, check with digital tachometer ( about 20.00 amazon.)

Thanks.
That should be a pretty simple test to heat it up (maybe block airflow while idling with cardboard?) and observe the fan
