Title: Transmission down shift

How many of you folks have a trany that seems to downshift rather harshly going into 1st just prior to a stop? I haven't driven a bunch of CC but did test drive a few and they all seem rough. I understand the Allison 'learning' think and thought that was probably the problem. Well I have driven over a 1000 miles and still have a rough downshift. Does my trany have ADS or is it just a slow learner? Maybe it is ME! Thanks, Larry

Mine occasionally "slams" and jerks when slowly decelerating to a stop.
Feels like you just hit a volkswagon. It, however only occurs with the PacBrake ON. I try to remember to turn off the PacBrake when in slow traffic such as stoplight to stoplight and have no problems.

Dave, your trany seem to be responding exactly like mine. Do you also notice a 'rumble' when shifting up from, maybe 3 to 4 or 4 to 5? I have had that since purchase as well, the dealer said everything was 'normal' of course. I have heard noises like the 'rumble' before in buses and always thought that the drive line was about to go.

I have a "rumble" between 35 and 40 mph in normal operation until I let up on accelerator or get out of that speed range. I have assumed it is an out of balance drive shaft but otherwise the coach runs very smoothly.

I also have had the abrupt down shift to first gear, usually while slowing on an uphill grade. Just assumed it was an inexperienced driver. Not a frequent event.

Larry,

Not so much a "rumble", but more of a "hard" shift. Only happens under "light" acceleration. Never happens at full throttle from a dead stop.
I would guess this is due to some slight "slippage" of the transmission clutches during the shift at high torque and no slippage at low torque, producing a "lurch" from engine suddenly slowing down due to the gear change.

Dave, thanks for the reply. I was wanting to reply to your post on Yahoo but I have not been able to access it for days. It just says it is not available.
Are you having the same problem? I think Yahoo is still functioning because I get messages from others that have been posted there on my e-mail. AH Yahoo, be glad when this forum switches to the other site.

Have you all changed fluids and filters lately? Disconnect the chassis battery, and reprogram the tranny to your driving habits. TWI 98 Allure 30255 and 2004 Intrigue.

I had the same problem with my 98 Allure, it was a bad wiring harness between the tranny and engine computer. TWI 30255 My new Intrgue is just fine

-TWI, I had the tranny serviced [fluid and filter changed] less than 1000

miles ago.

Could you explain about your statement to disconnect the batt. and reprogram the tranny? Where do you find that procedure? Thanks, Larry

As I remember the Allison manual states somewhere on the MD 3060, that if you lift the ground as directed in the cummins manual for storage, that the transmissions learning curve will start all over again. Then you must follow Allisons proceedure for teaching the transmission. After I got the harness repaired it worked. The new 3000 tranny is much better, but I think it is because it has the new ultra expensive long life tranny fluid in it. TWI 98 Allure 30255, Intrgue 2004 11731

TWI, I have a CAT driving a HD 4060 tranny, I'll have to dig around in the manuals, haven't found anything so far that refers to a procedure you describe.
