I'm interested in buying one of those "gee-whiz" wind deflectors that are installed under the slide awning (ZipDee) to prevent billowing.
At the Tucson ralley, I was given the name of Standley Mfg. in Junction City. Nobody answers the phone when I call. I have left at least three or four messages, but no response.

Is anyone aware of another manufacturer of these goodies?

-Larry,

I purchased both the galley & bedroom slide "stainless steel" deflectors from Standley. I installed them and they work perfect, thats the good news. The bad news is Greg Standley is an unprofessional business man. He will not return phone calls, requires cash up front for both product and freight. I wanted to purchase some more product from him.

I had Damon of Guaranty go by his place of business, meet with Greg S. ask if he would please return my phone calls. His reply to Damon was, I've got his numbers, I'll call him.....he has never called my home, business or cell phone. I wouldn't buy from him again if it was free.

Sorry,

Greg did some work for me a couple of years ago. He was selling the stainless tips for the exhaust, genset, hydrohot, etc. for a lot less than CC wanted plus he came to me and installed them. CC told him to stop selling out the back door or they would find another supplier.
Doesn't take a very smart person to figure out what to do in this case. This doesn't make any excuses for him not to call in any case but if you have ever been to his shop, you will see he is very busy.

If you are having the awning unfurl while in high winds, adjust the number of turns on the awning per Zip Dee instructions. I found my awning with less than the recommended number of turns on the spring and after adding the required turns, I haven't had the awning unfurl and I have been in some gusts of 40MPH+.

Doesn't anyone feel that ZipDee's double awning roller end locks and the center twist lock are sort've fool proof? On our previous RVs, I used a homemade device to lock the awning roller into place, but haven't felt a need to do the same on our CC's ZipDee.

Speaking of awnings . . . when I parked my new '04 Magna in its parking garage, I turned the engine off, and two window awnings deployed part way!!!!!!!! I didn't do anything - they just went out. Anybody heard of this and why it occurred? They did go back in with the remote control unit. I've had the coach out a few times, but this is a first.

My experience with Standley Mfg of Junction City was exactely the same as Larrys and I sent a comment to the Secretary of State asking if he had a license as he sure was doing business in a non-professional manner - No response for State.

I made my own with a 90 degree angle aluminum that I bought at home depot. I used a drimel drill to cut out a notch in it for the awning strap. then drilled holes in it for the mounting screws. I attached it with silicon and 4 screws. Depending on where you mount it you may need to drill pilot holes in the side of the coach for the screws. I hit the 2x2 metal braces with one screw and rather than drill into the metal brace I just cut off the screw. This allowed it to grip the outer fiberglass skin. If you do this be careful not to over tighten it and strip it out.

To those whose slide awnings have come unfurled. Before you go to the time, expense, and trouble of installing a deflector, make sure the awning spring has the correct number of turns on it. ZipDee recommends one turn for every foot of awning length PLUS eight more turns. When I checked mine, the awning only had 12 turns on it. After putting the correct number of turns on the spring plus the extra (I put 10 turns extra), I haven't had my awning come out once. Just a thought.

We actually had an awning unfurl, break both arms of the awning, hit the side of the coach on the end of the awning and land up on top of the coach after punching a hole on the roof.....needless to say it was very scary when it happened, it caused a lot of damage in fiberglass work and paint. Our awning was turned the correct number of turns but in a high wind it did not matter. The best $50 you will ever spend is on the wind deflectors, IMHO. Keep after Standley or have some one going up there order them for you. Candace Hollick 05 Affinity #6370

Candace,
Was it a Girard or A&E awning that unfurled?

It was a Zip Dee that was 18 ft long over the slide room on the driver side. The arms are made of a pot metal type substance that just snapped on both sides.
Yes, the locks were locked, but the wind just broke them anyway. After the wind deflectors were in place, no more problems, Candace

Larry,

In very strong winds, our locked, The driver side LR ZipDee awning unfurled and banged against the sidewall of our '00 Magna. I pulled over asap.
I found there was enough space between the awning arm and the lock that the awning arm had about 1/2" of "play" at the lock. This translated to about 2" or more at the spool end of the arm. The play allowed strong winds to start the awning to billow out and unfurl.
As an inexpensive, immediate solution I placed a rubber/vinyl spacer as a bushing between the lock and the arm. That removed the arm play and solved the unfurling problem for me.

Rick, no, the 05 Affinity has automatic awnings all around. We will be going to JC Oregon in June, maybe we could go see Greg Standley and see if he would do something about ordering for you folks who can not go there. We have dealt with Greg since 1998. Candace Hollick 05 Affinity 6370

I tried sending e-mail and photo to your address listed on your e-mail but it got returned.
I made a wind deflector for my A&E awning after it billowed out two different times. I have a 99 intrigue gally slide. It was the slide awning that I had problems with. The second time it happened I had already checked the number of times it had been wound and had placed a shim to tighten the movement in the arms of the awning as has been suggested by others.
I bought a 2 inch by 2 inch piece of 90 degree angled aluminum at home depot. It comes in six foot pieces ( I think) I used just one piece. This leaves about 24 inches at each end of the awning that is not protected. If you want ot cover all of it you could buy two pieces , cut each to the lenght that you need and leave a small space in the middle for the pulll down strap to hang though. I was on a trip and had to make it quick and without many tools so I used one piece, centering it in the middle and used my drimmil drill cutoff wheel to cut a space out of the middle for the pull down strap to hang though. I also slightly bent the tips at the ends of the angled aluminum down so the sharp edge would not cut the awning fabric. You could just glue it on with silicon glue but I felt that I should put in a few screws to hold it better. I put in 4 stainless steel screws. I drilled pilot holes in the aluminum angle and then used it to mark the places where it would screw into the coach. I then drilled pilot holes into the coach. As luck would have it one or two of the holes lined up weth the square metal frame work of the coach. I did not have the correct drill bits to drill into the metal so I measured the depth of the screw holes and cut off my screws to match that length. This ment that the screws were only holding onto the thin fiberglass skin of the RV. I then put clear silicon waterproof sealent into the holes and onto the back of my wind deflector that I had just made. I then screwed it snug and let the silicon dry. I mounted it about 1 inch below my awning. This prevents the air from a side wind from going between the awning roller and the side of the coach which I beleave causes the problem of billowing.
I have had no more problems and have been in some bad side winds after putting on the deflector. I think someone has already posted photo's of a simular deflector in the file/photo area of this forum. If you can't find them send me your e-mail address and I will try and send them to you.

You need something to lock the awning roller into place so it can't unroll while retracted. Bungeeing or strapping the awning arms together won't work, 'cause the awning can still unfurl if locking devices fail. If you don't believe it, retract a window shade in your house. Then, while holding the bottom rail into place with one hand, reach under the shade material with a finger from your other hand and pull the shade away from the roller. Same thing!
Clickon on www.awningsaver.com or www.coilnwrap.com to see info on commecial devices that positively lock the awning roller.

On my 98 Allure with Zip Dees and my Air Airstream tavel trailer with one of the two longest awnings they ever built I had locks. You just have to put a siogn on your slide controller to unlock the awnings first. TWI 98 Allure 2004 Intrigue. Dick, with all due respect, the wind deflector works well because when the angled stainless steel is in place under the awning, the awning can not unfurl. A strong wind billowing 18 or more feet of heavy canvas will break the locks. I would guess you have never experienced this....it is more than scary when it happens not to mention the damage and expense to repair. Like I said before, $50 for deflectors is IMHO the best money spent for an accesory. Candace Hollick 05 Affinity 6370

Please pardon my confusion, but is the problem of billowing awnings unfurling restricted to the Zip Dee awning. And am I correct in assuming that Zip Dee is a brand name? Or is it a model name...if so, what brand is that? Does it only occur with the slide out awnings? Please help a newbie determine if my coach is effected by this problem. Thanks.

Tony - Just a note about the awnings - we had a Discovery with A&E awnings - we had all kinds of problems - finally figured out the problem - but you have an Inspire and I have an Inspire #51038 - the Carefree awning over the drivers side slide came billowing out first in New Mexico on a two lane road - was able to find a place to pull off and I secured the locks and used a wrench to make them tight - I had not used the awnings prior to that - all is secure or so I thought - we are now on the Oklahoma turnpike and a trucker comes over the CB telling me my awning is loose and billowing - no shoulder - so we call the highway patrol - they come and with their red lights follow us down the turnpike until we can pull off and fix it - I used a hammer and locked the awning back in place - only solution - Carefree came by in Tucson and looked at the awnings and pulled them out for me - first time they had been fully extended. If it happens again I'm thinking I will figure a way to tarp strap them down so they don't come out in the wind. That's what I finally did with my hunk a junk Discovery.
