Hi All, does anyone know the cost of toll roads from Cleveland ohio to Rockford Illnois? Maybe someone of you know a better route from Charleston SC (traveling with our 10 yr old grandson) to Oregon via Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone. Thanks, Hollicks 05 Affinity 6370

We live in Southern Indiana, so our route to Mt Rushmore would be through St Louis, Sioux City, to Rapid City. I'd probably go up through Tennessee and Kentucky to I-64 to get to St Louis from Charleston

Hey John, how long do you think it will take us considering the fact that we dont do mountains or go faster than 25mph? (we have to maintain our 9.5 mpg!).
Seriously, John, thanks and we will look at the map.

Candace / Dale:

We recently used the North West Toll Road betwn Rockford and Chicago.
It's very reasonable in cost and has much less traffic than the area roadways.

Enroute there, we also visited Yellowstone, the Tetons, Rushmore and don't miss CRAZYHORSE.

We stayed in Custer, SD at Custer CrazyHorse RV Park. Its convenient, however, the sites and interior roads were poor, despite the TL Directory ratings. Another town in the area to consider for cmpgrds is Keystone, SD.
As large and wondrous Rushmore is, it would fit on the head of Crazyhorse when completed (not in our lifetime).
Its still under construction. We caught them on a day blasting took place during the week.

Its history and Visitor Center are unforgettable.
Also, there are 3 scenic drives in that area involving Hiways, #87, # 89, #244, and # 16a that we enjoyed and can be incorporated while visiting both monuments via your tow vehicle. Suggest an early start for visiting each monument.

After reviewing the Mountain Roads Directory, we chose Hiway #26 betw.
Casper and Teton NP and is a designated scenic hiway.
We stayed at the Colter Bay Cmpgrd in Teton NP cmpgrd ....is not big-rig friendly....beware of tree branches.

For Yellowstone, we stayed at Yellowstone Grizzley RV Park in West Yellowstone and HIGHLY REC. it for convenience, etc.... it deserves its high ratings.

See you in Oregon......happy, safe travels.....

I would avoid the Ohio turnpike (unnecessary), and avoid Chicago like the plague!!!

Iwould take I-26 from Charleston to I-81 Take I-81 slightly SW to I-75
I-75 to I-74 in Cincinnati
I-74 to Bloomington, IL

I-39 north to intersect I-90 near Rockford (by-passing Chicago) I-90 west to Badlands
I-90 west to Buffalo, WY

Then US 16 or 14 into Yellowstone
Then US 20 to Idaho Falls
South on I-15

then west on I-84 into Portland OR

Hi C and D

I made the trip about 5 weeks ago to Rockford. Hit Chicago at 1:30am. very little traffic.
The cost is minimal, $10 or so.

I hate Chicago traffic. It's nuts during the day.
So, I'd take I26 to I81 west to I75 to Cincinnati. Get on I74 all the way to Bloomington, Illinois. I74 is a lot easier than around Chicago. At Bloomington get on I39.. 110 miles of very quite interstate, low traffic volume.

Hi and thanks to all who wrote with directions for our travel across country. We will avoid the Chicago area and plan our route accordingly. Hollicks 05 Affinity #6370

I was going through a toll booth in Kansas last year. I had my tag axel to automatically raise when I slowed down. It was up when I went through the toll and it saved me a pretty good bit--several dollars--don't remember exactly how much. I would not have thought about it, but the guy in the booth said told me that since it was up, he did not charge me for the extra axel.

I almost guarantee that would never happen in California . I think out here they train the toll booth attendants to see double.

Nope, he counted the toad. But, seems that the 5th axel is the one that jumps the $$$ up.
I went on a toll bridge in Florida a few years ago. Cost more to tow the car than it would have to drive the car and motor home separately. Of course, I did not have anybody to drive the car for me. And even if there had been somebody to drive it, the difference was not enough to have unhooked it for the savings. Just thought it was interesting that it cost more to have them together.

Toll Roads !!!!

Last summer, we were traveling into New York City, we got to experience north bound I-95 toll roads. By the time we arrived at the George Washington bridge I had had it with the numerous tolls and the attitudes. Their tolls were the only contribution I made to the City of New York's "tourism" trade.
