Has anyone researched the new "flat" TV satellite dishes? The current issue of Motorhome Magazine has a nice article about them.
Instead of putting 12 to 14 inches of "dome" on your coach roof, these new collectors are between 4 and 5 inches high. They are aimed at the SUV market, but looks like a good fit for larger motorhomes.
In certain areas of the country, saving a few inches in overall height might be good.

I have no direct experience with these new flat panel (phased array) satellite antennas, but...
These antennas were discussed at an FMCA technical seminar at Albuquerque (sp?) this sping. The speaker pointed out that these new antennas tend to collect water when stationary and will have signal loss problems. His take was that they would be very good for "in motion" use, but the new low-profile domes would be a better choice for use in damp conditions.

We had one (Datron) and it was awful. I took forever to locate a signal properly and, after several changes of the "computer board" and twicking the darn thing, on the rare occasion it did get a sat signal, rain fade from the slightest mist obliterated it.
Changed back to tried and true Motosat - and wouldn't have anything else.

There is another issue with sat antenna's and domes which most people may not realize? We have 2 friends who had sat domes installed and each had a hard time receiving the signal and when they finally received the signal, it certainly took a long time. It seemed from talking with them, that when the computer for the sat. would search for the signal, UNLESS the computer was fine tuned to receive what ever service you have, (ie Direct, Dish), the computer would search ALL sat signals, thus taking a long time to lock in! So make sure that your system is tuned in to your specific system? Seems to have worked for them!

Thanks for all of your input about the new flat TV satellite dishes.
Someone did mention lower domes - what brand?? We live and travel in areas where total height can be an issue, and anything that will minimize additions to the 12' 2" coach height would be good.

That is what CCI is putting on the 05 Magnas. With the new front and the awnings mounted above the roof you do not see the sat dome at all.
