I am a retired Navy guy and currently work as the summer host at the US Air Force Academy FamCamp. For those of you not familiar with FamCamp, it stands for Family Campground and provides tent and RV sites for Active duty and retired folks traveling around the country.
Anyway, I plan on going to the Florida Keys sometime late January. I know from reading other boards, Dick Campagna has been to the Keys. I would appreciate any advice on getting to and staying at Sigsbee RV park. I hear that the dry area is closer (walking distance) to town.
Any information would be appreciated.

We've wintered at Sigsbee RV Park, the US Navy CG in KW, the past five years, from the beginning of January through the beginning of April. The campground is so busy that time of year that you can't immediately get a full hookup site. You have to wait in one of the dry camping areas (one of which ... Trumbo ... is closer to town) before getting your two-week full hookup site. Then you rotate back and forth for the duration. This year, we first spent three weeks in dry camp; two weeks full hookup; then back and forth for the duration, spending a slightly shorter time in dry camp each time.
Many people don't like dry camping so either don't come in the first place or leave shortly after arriving. Quiet hours are from 11pm to 7am, so you can't use a genset for overnight A/C, and it does get pretty hot, even that time of year.

Yep, Bluewater is the best. A couple years ago we stayed at America Outdoors at marker 97.5 which was real nice. They are on Key Largo. A little tight. 305 852 8054

You best call in advance to any RV Park in the Keys you plan to stay at way in advance. Many of the RV Parks have been sold to developers for condos. Outdoor Resorts and Jolly Roger and the KOA are still open now but they have all been sold and now it is only a matter of time til they will be closed to make way for construction.

Try Jolly Roger RV park in Marathon, if you're Passport America the rate is 50% less.
We stayed there in January 2009 had everything we needed and located halfway along the keys it was easy to visit anywhere from Key Largo to Key West.

A favorite place in the Keys would be Bahia Honda, mile marker 36. State park $39 per day, Reserve America handle all reservations. This time of the year the reservations are made 11mnds ahead, but you can find cancellations. I just found a 13 day window on the water. If you are a Veteran, the Navy base in Key West have two camp grounds and a hotel. Dry camping $14, full hock up $22 and the hotel $60 and no tax.
Most private rv parks in the keys are $70 to $115 per night. Marathon has a Lazydays Restaurant that feels like old Florida on the water with marinas. We go to the keys 2-3 times a year, I dont think you will be disappointed Tom Buka

I think that use of Sigsbee RV at the Naval station on Key West is not for those with just veteran status. Below is a list of requirements taken from the Sigsbee site.
*AUTHORIZED USERS: Active, National Guard, Reservists, Retired, 100% DAV, DoD Civilians, DoT civilians working for Coast Guard, NATO allies on orders to the US.
I am fortunate to qualify and have used the park. It is a great facility. Below is link.

We just found out that my girlfriend qualified for the Identification and Privilege Card from the Department of Defense/Uniformed Service because her first husband was killed in Viet Nam and that was not listed in the Authorized User guide.
