Here's a true story we heard last year at Yellowstone. The Ranger told us to watch out for bears, especially brown bears.
He said not to worry about black bears. They are afraid of humans and will run. Beware of the brown bears! Some backpackers will carry pepper spray and even put little bells on their backpacks to warn the bears.
I asked how we could tell whether we were in brown bear or black bear country. The Ranger said it was simple: "Just look at their droppings....the black bear droppings are small and round, the brown bear droppings are larger and often have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray!"
