Wooops! This week I shelled out over two grand for a new KVH flat antenna. I have a clearance problem with my garage door and have been using a fold-down automatic winegard for the past five years.
Comes not the reports that the antenna is not as good as the dome type.
I was happy to see an "in-motion" that is flat that is now available for RV's and I couldn't wait to get my hands on one.
I like to feature of having a signal when I stop and not having to fool with the zip code, azmuth, etc, etc. Besides, the aiming process was seldom a one-shot thing and recieved my wrath more than once.
The folks at KVH told a pretty convincing story but were very quick to mention that rain and moisture would effect the signal. Otherwise, they say the system has been in military usage for quite some time and recently developed for civilian usage due to the popularity of tv's in vans and sport utility rigs. (The little kiddies must be able to watch Barney while driving to preschool, you know.)
Does anyone have a KVH flat antenna that they have used and find to be acceptable? I haven't unpacked the box yet and I'm sure I could return it within a few days.
Positive feedback would give a warm, fuzzy feeling and I may go ahead and install it anyway.
Thanks for your input.

with dew on it no signal. My 05 Magna had it on. Installed by the factory.
We are having it removed it and installing a dome.

factory.
I don't recommend a dome and will never have one again. Dew doesn't affect it, but if it rains even slightly more than a sprinkle, I lose my satellite signal. I sometimes lose the signal when it is only cloudy. This never happened when I had the open satellite on my house. There I lost the signal only one time when there was a strong thunderstorm between me and the satellite.

I don't know about the new "flat" KVH, but we've been unhappy with the KVH InMotion Dome and would change it for a Motosat in the future. The KVH loses reception in rain, mist, etc. We have talked with Motosat folks and it "appears" that they are more powerful than KVH...haven't really checked the specs. I would do some further checking since I can't imagine the flatter area would fare better than the dome in poor weather.
Just my 2 cents...

Sorry to be a nag, but it appears the KVH is standard equipment or at least optional on the Magna's and Affinities.
Candace and Dale: Do you folks have KVH antennas on your new rig? If so, how would you rate it?
Thanks, Bill for your response. It was a little comforting to hear that you like yours. My new one sits in a box in my garage waiting for me to decide whether to send it back or install it.
I'd like to hear from someone else that has one (or two) on their new coaches. I aired my concern with the folks at KVH and they assured me of satisfaction.
Thanks for your response.

Larry, we have a TracStar in motion dome. We do not have a ladder on the back so we felt that the dome would be better. Fosters have an Affinity and they seem to like their KVH sytem. We met them at the factory but I do not know their coach number. Good Luck, Candace Hollick Affinity 6370
