Title: Hydraulic hose failure?

Have you experienced failure of hydraulic hoses near the engine fan hydraulic motor? 2 large hoses are wearing thru by rubbing against hose.
At 7000 miles, over 3 inches of steel hose braid is exposed. We are trying to figure how far we can travel before the hydraulic fluid hoses rupture.
Plemmons RV is 738 miles away.

Also what is cure? The hoses must move some inches to do the mutual damage they have.

Because of previously related problems in this or another group, I told the shop who maintains our coach about it ... and they responded by installing looms over the hose at any wear points. Of course these looms would eventually wear through, but they can be checked on a regular basis.
BTW ... the steel connection on the steering box end of a friend's coach's hydraulic hose corroded through ... apparently from salt ... and he lost all his fluid, fortunately in front of his house. The coach was towed and the end of the hose was replaced.

Hi Eric,

I would tie back the hyd hoses with large plastic tie wraps.
Then run the engine and see what if any vibration might be occuring.
Take picures before and after as this sounds like poor hose routing and securing, but it could be a vibration issue especially when the hyd fan motor runs at max rpms. In any case it appears warrranty should cover this situation.

Eric,

You should be able to go to any hose house or auto supply and they should have some kind of "shield" of some sort or protector to put over the hose, especially when new to prevent hose wear at those points.

Eric,

I had the same problem. I moved the hoses away from anything that could rub on them and cut pieces of heater hose and made sleeves to protect the lines. All of this tied real good with plastic wire ties.

Eric,

Further to Fred's suggestion. Place a piece of rubber pipe insulation (mentioned in earlier postings regarding windshield wiper longevity) around the hyd hoses at points where you you use plastic tie wraps. This will prevent abrasion from the tie wraps.
As for hoses rupturing. This is unlikely as long as the steel braid has not been worn to the point that it is weakened. The "seal" is the inner rubber (sic) core of the hose. The braid holds it intact.
The outer rubber jacket protects the braid and provides some extra thermal insulation.

Remember, though, that plastic gets brittle and breaks after awhile. I've heard of FMCA members losing their membership plaques after securing them to their rear ladder with plastic wire ties which eventually gave way.

Hi dick,

Just an observation but isn't most of a Country Coach secured with plastic tie wraps?
