Title: Lazy steps

Has anyone else had problems with their entry steps only going part way out every so often? If so what causes it. Thanks.

Yep....I got underneath and greased the slide mechanisms (hinges??) thoroughly. No more problems.

John & Merilee,

Had similiar issues. Dirt gets into slides. Spoke with Kwikee who makes step assemblies for CC. They stated only use WD-40 to clean the slides. They stated WD-40 is really a solvent & does a good job of cleaning. Apply liberally. Since I've used this procedure I have had no problems.

Mike,

I have used silicon spray in the past and has worked for a bit.
Maybe water washes it off. What do you use?

You are all on the right track. The most common failures with the entry step is lack of maintanace. The entry step guides are very valnerable to the elements while traveling. W-D 40 is a very good product to use for cleaning the step guides, but does not work good as a long term lubricant. I recommend using a greasless silicone based lubricant. I also highly recommend doing this more often especially when you have been driving in winter conditions. The more the better.

Hi Folks,

WD40 is a great cleaner.

For lubrication after cleaning on anything consider using Union76 Gearite HD1750CF - it has an oil base with grease added.

It sounds to me like Kwikee was totally consistant as they told me that no lubricant is required, but if washing clean did not solve dirt issue then only use a liberal amount of WD-40 to clean out the slide tracks. Remember they do not consider WD-40 to be a lubricant.
Since I have followed this regimen I have had no problems. It is obvious by the posts that others have had good luck using a lubricant.
Many times there might be more than one way to get satisfactory results for their use. I tried numerous types of lubricants with poor results. I use what works for me.

In clarification of my last post. I have been referring to Kwikee advising that no lubricant being used on the slides that mount on each side of the steps & are visible when the steps are open. I do use lubricant on the linkage pivot points that are under the steps & covered by the access cover.

About six months after I bought my coach, the steps were hanging about half way out. Was in the Dallas area and stopped by Foretravel and they cleaned the grease off the guides and sprayed the moving parts with W-40 and have been using it from then on and the steps work like they should. Grease has a tendency to collect dirt etc. the stuff just gets stuck in the grease. As someone has said, during wet and winter conditions you will need to use the W-40 more often.

Thanks to one and all for the tips on my lazy steps. I will start using WD-40 instead of silicone spray. This site is awesome. Where else can you consitantly get help with most any problem with your coach. You guys are great. Sitting at Oaks 'N' Pines RV park in Lake City, Fl.. This is really a nice little park. Clean and neat with wide pull thrus, plenty of area for letting the dogs run and best of all, the owners, Jim and Cheree bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable. Also, Wednesday thru Sunday nite, Judy serves a home cooked meal in the clubhouse for only $6.00 and it is great.
