Hi Folks,
As one drives through towns with a wifi card or wifi built in to your laptop or tower, you can't help receiving wifi. I used to use Net Stumbler but with the new built in function, either way detects wifi, the bigger the town, the more the hits. Where is this coming from - coffee houses, libraries, tourist businesses, rv parks, gas stations, cities, hardware stores, and from folk's home or business wireless routers (assuming there are on line with cable, DSL or dialup and not locked). I have used the latter with some success. Pretty soon WiMax will start with up to 30 mi radius. Lompoc CA is doing the whole town (17 mi from where I live) - how they do it is up in the air. I understand Seattle is in process. The cable folks will squeal, but then if they are the connection to the gateway, they still get revenue. So I go down the road with 2 laptops on the dash - one for gauges and GPS map and the other as the wifi detector.

If you have a good notebook, it should be able to run all these apps simultaneously with no problem. Probably play your favorite MP3's also. Minimize NetStumbler and set it up so that it signals you via the MIDI output when it receives a signal. It will sound like your cat walking up and down a piano keyboard! Tom Fisher
