Bob,

I would follow Steve's prep instructions, watching out for melting the plastic.

I have had excellent results with a product made by Rustoleum called "Plastic Primer." Following the application instructions, two coats of Rustoleum "Navaho White," worked great on my refrigerator roof vent. I am a big fan of Krylon, but not of mixing brands; maybe you could find a finish color more to your liking than Navaho White.
I am sure you will be happy with the results. These products I picked up at Home Depot.
