A falling can of pineapple chunks has ruined the laptop computer. We would most miss it while traveling without the DeLorme Street Atlas program & GPS receiver.
A new notebook computer could be bought near $1400.
OR
A home computer could be put under the right side dashboard and connected to a high definition TV from Dishnetwork installed in original TV position.
This 38" TV has many input connectors, and can display up to 1080 dots horizontal. Actually better resolution than the old laptop computer.
The screen would do high definition TV & DVD AND be a map display large enough for Terry to see clearly. Plus it would probably be safe from canned fruit.
The cost is nearly same for new notebook or Dishnetwork TV, Dishnetwork receiver & another home computer. $1400 notebook or $699 + 0 + $600.
The only disadvantage I worry about is not having a notebook available to run DeLorme Street Atlas in the toad. The bit that kills power to TV when ignition switch is on would have to be disabled and the screen would be way too bright for night driving.
What are we missing? Have you a better idea? Should we spend over $1500 to get a LCD TV instead?

Hmmmm....that wouldn't work for me for two reasons: I like to multitask..watch TV, play on the computer at the same time and if using the TV for computer screen, that would leave me unable to be chatting online while watching the NASCAR races. Add that to...keeping the driver's eyes on the road. When Terry says, turn left, will you look at the screen to check her directions? It might happen even though you don't intend to do it.
I would, however, like to have the 38" HDTV. ;-) You do have some choices to make. I think I'd get the new computer and save up to get the HDTV next.

Eric,
As I see it, the main problem with using anything other that a laptop computer while in motion is the hard drive. Laptop hard drives are designed for rugged use, desktops are not. Those who have PVRs in their MHs are discovering that having them on damages the hard drive, the same ones used in desk top computers.
