Jan,
Hope you are having fun on the West coast.
I just returned this morning from the shop I use here and have the same problem. Not sure it's rust but the cooling unit has to be replaced and the dollars are about the same and Ron's. I have read on other Groups that rust and/or the fluid mixture used in these systems is the cause of this problem. Not sure how rust, if that is the problem, gets into a closed system. The fluid issue is caused be the unit being on but running on a VERY unlevel position. The chemicals seperate and somehow mess up but I did get the feeling that we would not have our units so unlevel that it would cause this to occur. So I have no idea why this happens. BTW, he had a older Pace Arrow with the same Dometic in there and was replacing the cooling unit on that MH.
My symptoms are as follows:
Will not make ice, fridge side stays in the mid 40"s, and the freezer stays about 15-18 degrees, ice cream will stay soft. At times, after driving some, it will work as normal for a few days and then mess up again. He indicated that driving could make the fluids work proper again but it would only work for a short period of time. And that is what mine is doing.
I am taking the coach to Bill Plemmons in Winston-Salem next Tuesday for the electrolysis repair and may just have them replace the cooling unit since they will have it for a couple of weeks.
I may consider a new fridge, about $4,300, so I will probably just have the cooling system replaced.
I follow a few groups and I am not aware that this is a common problem but would like to know if others are having the same problem. I would like to think we get more than 4 or 5 years out of these Dometic units.
