Title: C-13 Jake Brake Question

Here is how our jake brake is working. In the low and high positions the transmission automatically downshifts to 4th gear and applies the jake brake. In middle position, no downshift occurs although it seems to apply the exhaust brake. Once the brake is on, there seems to be no difference in braking between any of the three positions. I suspect this is not right but I'm looking for comments. Also, is it normal for the jake to not function if the cruise control is on? If so, why didn't CC wire the jake so that it cancels the cruise instead of the cruise cancelling the jake. If it's not normal, I'll put it on my fix list. Thanks.

Bob,

If that is the way your Jake brake is working, it is not working right. The only thing the three-position switch is doing is select whether the brake is activated on two, four or six cylinders, with increasing brake force with increase of number of cylinders used. Once you turn the Jake on, the tranny should downshift as far as the RPMs allow. With the cruise control on, the transmission will still downshift, but the Jake brake will not come on until you lightly touch the brake pedal.

Bob, have you dropped your speed low enough for the transmission to downshift into a lower gear? John 2002 Allure

Yes, the speed has dropped and it downshifts fine in 1st and 3rd range but not in 2nd range. I've forced a downshift in 2nd range and it holds back but just the same as 1st and 3rd.

It didn't seem right to me. Thanks for confirming.
