I have been reading with interest the comments and responses on C9 problems but haven't seen anything like I am experiencing.
With ~17,000 miles now on the coach and after numerous visits to Cat dealers all over country both east and west of the Mississippi some problems have been resolved, two problems have not.
I would be very interested in hearing from other C9 owners what their fuel mileage is. Ours started at less than 6 mpg and is now up to about 6.6 mpg.
This engine also produces copious amounts of black exhaust when cold - this is present whether at idle or under power but is worse under power. It also produces a large amount of soot when warmed up any time there is a change in throttle position to increase speed or power.
Solved issues include replacement of the high pressure fuel pump and several software updates which solved some major drive-ability issues. Power is adequate but not great.
I don't have Silverleaf but do have a Cat Pocket Tec which indicates boost gets as high as 31-32 psi and we seldom have power problems.
What are you other folks getting for fuel mileage and is soot production an issue? We've owned two other DPs including a 2000 Intrigue with a Cummins and a 2002 Tradewinds with a 3126E Cat - these engines gave much better fuel mileage and produced little to no soot. By better I mean 7.5 and sometimes 8+ mpg.
We tow a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee which we towed with the previous rigs as well.

10,500 miles so far and I'm getting about 6.5 MPG.
Sometimes a little better and even a few in the 5's.
Seems to be the average for these newer C-9's.

H&D, how fast are you driving to average 6.5mpg? That sounds terrible unless you're driving over 70mph.

That sounds about right for the CAT C-9 Acert Engines, specially if it is not broken-in.
