Rosemary,

You may find postings on the Yahoo group site "monacoers" an interesting read regarding parking at Walmart. This has become a real hot issue with the Affinity Group (Good Sam, Camping World, Coast to Coast, and many others) as well as KOA, allegedly in a very vocal effort to ban such boondocking. The monacoers site is open to all unlike the MCOA site which recently banned the Walmart discussion.
Anyway there are a few dozen posts on this issue so have a fun read.
Anyone interested in this serious topic may wish to follow up with e-mails to those organizations that may be involved.

Thanks.

I removed the post because I changed my plans. But I am aware of the controversy. I can see both sides. People abuse the privelege and the campground owners want their business. I have only stayed at Walmart once in 3 years. I don't like to, but would consider it in a pinch.
I am in Missoula, MT and the campground owner had an article about the controversy in several cities here on his check in desk for everyone to see. Campground owners forced law enforcement to crack down where there was a ordinance against overnight campers.

Rosemary and Lyle -

What is the exact site address where this Wal Mart discussion is going on? May have typed it incorrectly.

Thanks.

We've stayed at WalMart on 2 occaisions. Both times we spoke to a mgr. and were given an OK. At Palmdale, Ca. the mgr. not only gave us permission, but added to the effect, that there is a policy memorandom/inclusion (?) by "Sam himself" giving specific approval for RVers. She thought he may have been an Rver at some point.
WalMart publishes an atlas of maps giving info on each store location plus a phone contact number.
While enroute to Alaska 3 years ago we shopped, but did not stay, at the WalMart in Whitehorse, Y.T. where we counted 61 RVs of all descriptions from popups to buses at 9:00pm in their parking lot. We took a photo which did not portray the scene adequately. An aerial view would have been more revealing. BTW, The cmpgrds in Whitehorse are a major stopover and a jumpoff point to Skagway for the RV Caravan businesses.

We are headed up to Missoula in a couple of weeks for some Fly Fishing. Where are you staying and do you recommend it?

Kathy,

The site is rv.net--go down to the open roads forum. We have had one Wal-Mart thread running for a few years with some strong opinions both ways about parking at Wal-Mart. You can do searches, and should have no problem finding many threads on this subject.

Larry, Bill and Mary's RV Park on US93 just north of I-90 is a nice park. Last year they added a bunch of new spaces for big rigs. We stayed there last year just after they finished the sites and the grass was still growing. What rivers are you planning to fish? We're headed over their the middle of September to fish the Clark Fork and the Bitterroot.

Bob: We don't know. It's our first time there. We thought we would talk to some of the locals for advise.

You've essentially got 4 choices, maybe 5. I have never fished the Clark Fork or the Blackfoot (River Runs Through It) but they are available from Missoula. I have fished the Bitterroot and Rock Creek. The Bitterroot is mostly a brown fishery near Missoula and becomes more of a cutthroat fishery upriver (south) about 50 miles.
Rock Creek is more of a creek type cutthroat fishery. This year I'm going to get some time on the Clark Fork near St. Regis, MT. The Grizzley Hackle fly shop in Missoula is a good place to get some advice. You might want to consider a guide on the Clark Fork the first time since I've heard its a different beast than most MT rivers.

Larry,

Sorry, I have not been back on the website until today. I stayed at the Jellystone Park just west of Missoula. Very nice very clean park.
I have stayed there many times. Great views too!
And if you are around Billings, the original KOA is there and boy is it ever a nice park as well... some really long sites,(100ft.)

Have fun!

Kathy,

The address is the same as this site except you substitute "monacoers" for "Country-Coach-Owners" The discussion is very long but if you can wade through it all you will find what looks like substantive information regarding the ARVC drive to have local communities pass ordinances against parking at Walmarts and anywhere other than a campground. ARVC may also have strong alliance on this issue with other organizations such as the Affinity Group.
