Title: 05 Intrigue Ovation question
Post by: Jamesmcall on September 06, 2005, 11:18:55 am

We are looking for advice on buying a used 05 42 foot Intrigue Ovation with the 525 C13 Cat. It was purchased last year and has approximately 6000 miles.

The owner is asking around 300,000.

Is that a fair price? It has most of the options - Advantium convection oven, outside 30" LCD TV, Massage/heated seats, safe, computer table, washer/dryer, King bed, rollout trays and appears to be in great condition.

We've read most of the posts on the C13 and the Intrigue and is seems like it would be a wonderful motorhome.
Since this will be our first coach we are being conservative (perhaps too much) before we buy but would like to know if this price is OK.

I have a 2005, 42' 525 C13 Cat. We have had nothing but problems with the C13 overheating, because the manufacture failed to test the unit properly. So be careful.

Re: [Country-Coach-Owners] 05 Intrigue Ovation question Joe,

Did you have the Country Coach C-13 service bulletins completed? They certainly solved the problems with my C-13 overheating.

Joe,

Thanks for the caution about the overheating.

Dick, thanks for the information about the service bulletins. I'll make sure they have been completed.

How does the price sound?

Yes!

It was completed at Lazy Days in Florida. When we got to the CC service center they told us it was done inproperly. The fan shard was installed wrong. We also had a overheating problum with the trans. So CC service installed an external cooler. The new cooler we think has a whole in the internal system. Also, the fan controller was never programmed properly by CC service tech's. This caused the trans to overheat and engine to shutdown. The Trans & enging fluid is brown in color and must be changed. Along with a complete engine diagnostic test must be preformed. The engine bay got so hot it melted the battery bay door along with the house & engine batteries. We have found that this is a common problem with C13 engines because CC failed to test the engine other than in the dyno test. Apparently, there is insufficient air flow to cool the engine and transmission components.

The best advice that I can recommend is to take 25% off the list price when new. Go from there.

Beaudry RV did our upgrade and we have had no problems with the engine overheating. The transmission has gotten a little hot in city traffic but by putting the tranny in neutral when waiting at lights we haven't overheated. Worst we have gotten is 240 degrees.
The engine temp runs between 192-204 unless we are climbing a hill and then it might hit 208.

Without seeing all of the options on your 05 Intrigue I would guess that the "list" on your coach must be in the mid 5's? If so, you probably could have bought it new for around 72% to 78% of list for a cash purchase (no trade). Seems like a "steal" to me. >:-}

Thanks for the comparable,

I talked to CC sales today and they stated that I could give them the coach number and they could print out a build sheet with the MRSP.

We're planning on doing that tomorrow.

That is getting a little hot. The programming is set to shut off the engine at about 252. Its sad to say that we spend that amount of money to find we have to shift to neutral in order to keep the unit from overheating. We found when climbing a long grade is when the transmission system overheated and shut down the coach.

The 240 is a one time event and I suspect the fact that I was using the compression brake in town had a lot to do with it. Our experience climbing hills has been totally different. Since the cooling upgrade, the transmission temp drops 2-3 degrees on long uphill grades. When the engine coolant temp reaches about 206 the cooling fan runs continuously and it causes the transmission temp to drop. Normally our transmission temp runs 214 max with an occasional rise to 216 when its 100 degrees. I agree we shouldn't have to put the transmission in neutral but the Allison book says don't spend long periods idling with the transmission in gear.

James and Kris,

My C13 cooling performance is about the same as Bob Stephens. Hardly ever over 210. Worst was a grade outside Bullhead City Arizona at 120 outside, saw 226 briefly at 55 mph cresting the grade. Going slower and gearing down on grades will keep temps down more than I did, but I had to test it somewhere.

Trans temps around 215 to 220 driving, idling in drive for extended periods will get you to 235 pretty quickly at temps above 100 degrees.

My upgrade was done at the factory. Make sure the primary turbo change was done too.

Can't comment on the price.

Ron,

Thanks, we're familiar with the hill out of Bullhead city.
It must be a great coach if you're doing 55 at the top.

We're takeing the unit for a test drive tomorrow and we'll check on the turbo change.

Hard to say. Is it a 4 hundred series or 5 hundred series? How many slides? Basically, I would shoot at or below NADA 'low retail' as my target price, and would start a bit below that to have some bargaining room.

The online NADA site does not list the 2005 models yet. For comparison, a 2004 505, 3 slide has a low retail of about 280,000, and an average retail of about 340,000. Wholesale (what a dealer will allegedly pay) would be maybe 240,000 (i'm guessing). Buying that 2004 unit, I might start at 250,000 and go up to 275,000. So a comparable 2005 might be a decent deal in the 260,000 to 290,000 range. On the other hand, if you find out the original MSRP, you may be able to figure out a value as well. I'd say, take 25% off MSRP to find a good price when new. Then take at least another 20% off due to being used and a year old.

All pricing assumes that nothing needs to be done to get it to 'retail' condition.
