Can anyone advise us about Interstate 20 between Birmingham and Dallas since Katrina? Fuel looks good at Flying J, but what about traffic and the road itself? We're considering that route for travel this weekend, versus Interstate 40 from Knoxville to Dallas via Interstate 40 through Texarcana. Thanks for your help,

If you are leaving from Knoxville, I recommend I-40 thru Memphis to Little Rock then I-30 thru Texarkana to Dallas. I think the roads are better, especially considering I-20 around Jackson, Ms. I live in Texarkans and have made the trip both ways, and the only bias against I-40 is heavy truck traffic between Memphis and Little Rock. If you are near Texarkana, the fair grounds have full hookups priced very resonably. Signs are posted how to get there ( airport exit ).

Hi Walt,

We've been that way (I-40) before. We just wanted to know if going a different route than usual was worth it. We've never been in GA/AL/MS/LA before, and were concerned about the hurricane's effects (plus we wanted to put those stickers on our US map). Thanks for the comeback.

Claude and Judy, I live in B'ham and have traveled the I20 west to Dallas many times. I40 is no better a road than I20. The hurricanes did no damage of which I am aware to the hiway. Fuel is plentiful.

I suggest that you fill up at the flying J at I20 Alabama exit 104.
Or, if you are north of B'ham on I65 use the J at exit 264. You should be good all the way to Dallas.

I don't think that the hurricane did any damage to I-40. There will be some raod construction around Jackson, MS. If you have time, look around Vicksburg, very historic. Also, the Flying J @ Jackson did have a 4 cent cash discount on diesel when we came through before Katrina.

Hi, C & J,

By all means take the I-20 route if you've never been that way before. Do I interpret from your point of origin in Knoxville your blood runs orange like mine ( class of 1954 )?
