Fred: My exhaust manifold cracked at about 30k and four years into the five year 100k engine warranty.
I couldn't hear any difference but discovered it while looking for an oil leak. The cracked manifold had caused the plastic dip stick tube to melt and leak oil. The crack allows hot exhaust to blow out but isn't always audible because of all the noise coming from the engine under normal operation, especially when cold.
Cummins did the warranty but the cheap skates charged me an hour to change the dip stick tube: $75.00. It took two hose clamps. Had I known they wouldn't warranty the tube, I would have replaced it myself!
Unfortunately CC used a cheap plastic tube right next to the engine and wouldn't warranty the tube. They said it was an engine warranty problem and cummins said it was a CC problem. (sound familiar?)
It's not a bad idea to look at the manifold with the engine cover removed while you are still within the warranty period (if).
I've heard of several of them cracking. It seems to be a cummins problem.
