Just used the Pioneer to guide us to the S CA desert and then back home to N California. It was very un reliable. Off by 100 miles on a 500 mile trip. Took us onto surface streets when the Freeways would have been much better. Tried to use it to return home through Los Angeles, and asked it for a time and distance calulation to a midpoint for the evening. This leg was was off by 2 hours and many miles. Called Pioneer upon our return and they said that the unit isn't made for large vehicles. In other words they don't support RV's. The new version coming out in 06 doesn't support RVs and Trucks either.
I wouldn't recommend the unit for a Class A.

BTW We made sure it was setup correctly.

I think CC R&D should hear this before they install to many more of them in coaches still in production. It would be a service to future owners if they sent their current inventory back and found a better supplier.

I talked to them today (CC) and they said an e-mail to sales@... (sales@...) would be appreciated.

In the past four years I have heard so many stories about problems with the Pioneer system I can't believe they stay in this business. When I hear a good experience it is really a surprise.

I had an Alpine for about three years before the monitor went out. It was a great system. Unfortunately the monitor would cost more than a new Pioneer complete unit so I bought a new Pioneer. Big mistake. The Alpine is far superior to Pioneer.

Alpine was great in my 03 and is also in my Yukon toad. I agree the Pioneer is unreliable and very user unfriendly.

I wonder if we can use the Pioneer hardware with some other system.

Regarding the Pioneer system.

I don't want to stir things up (again) but actually, we've found the Pioneer system to work ok. We have an 05 Magna and when the system was replaced (due to a problem with our original AVIC 1) with an updated AVIC 2 - it does seem better.

Our toad is a Mercedes ML and nothing beats the nav system there. We've tried "portable units" but never find them as convenient as built in models.
Obviously the accuracy and usability of these units is a function of the software and not so much the hardware running the software. We can only hope that Pioneer works on their software vendor to do a better job as updates become available.

I have Pioneer in the coach and Alpine in the toad. Alpine far superior in hardware and software.

Charlie,

Have you ever come to a CC rally? The Pansonic/Pioneer rep is always there with plenty of support and training on the Pioneer GPS. We even get our unit cleaned and fixed by this guy. He has never let us down.

Mr. Bill, I have in fact been to the rallys and have talked at length with the Pioneer rep. I've even given him specific routes that the unit does not navigate correctly on. So far, his best answer was that the units were designed for cars, not motorhomes...
I'm not sure why that was suppose to make me feel better about getting lost?????Ha....He took my name at the Moultrie rally and I have yet to hear back from him...and by the way he did not show up at the Ft. Myers rally. The fact is, Pioneer needs to upgrade their software and mapping to get competitive, in my opinion...and it would help if they listened to their customers....
Oh well, I always have my Garmin to get me out of trouble...

Hi All, I am having a problem with the GPS. I can not get the screen to pop up when the button is depressed. Any suggestions on how to try to get the pop up to work? Also possible replacement recommendations would be appreciated since this is the orginal GPS that is getting repaired again. Thanks in advance! Marianne

Well that's an open ended question if I've ever heard one.....
With that said, I'm still a Pioneer fan.... but, almost any brand will work. You need to answer some questions, do you need/want GPS built in, do you want/need Bluetooth, what inputs does it need, what outputs does it need? After answering those questions, then go to an audio retailer (i.e. Fry's, Best Buy, local car audio shop, etc..) and play with the current available units. See what seems right to you & doesn't seem overcomplicated.... Then with that who's going to replace the unit, if your not, then I'd go to your RV repair shop and discuss what you want done. I recommend having a RV audio tech do the work and not the car audio shop, simple reason is we end up unflocking lots of coaches that a car audio shop had installed. Normally most of it works......

I will say is that most of the units we're replacing these days do not have GPS built in. One reason is the cost savings, sometimes as much as $500. The other is the handheld GPS units are much cheaper and usually better. It all depends on you & what you're willing to spend.....

Marianne,

I have a Pioneer AVIC-N2 in our coach and a Pioneer AVIC-Z1 in my 2006 Explorer Toad. The N2 has failed to open for my a few years ago and I sent it to the Pioneer repair facility in Long Beach, CA and had it fixed under a recall warranty for the cable that makes the screen motor out. It has just failed on me again and I have found the following guy who will do it for half the price of the Pioneer repair facility and also upgrade the maps to the 2010 maps for $130. It is a 2 day job for him, you ship it and he ships it back to you. Here is his info:

Thanks, Steve, for the info. I got it to pop up after running a credit card under the screen. It was working the last time I tried. We plan to keep the GPS as we have a portable Garmin and use the back up camera only. Thanks again, Marianne
