When traveling down I-5 on my way to the Phoenix area, I always went up the grapevine, then took I-210 to I-10. Often traffic would be terrible, especially if there was an accident. One time when it was raining, we had to get by three different accidents.
This time, I got off I-5 at highway 46 though Wasco over to 99. Then 99 South to 46, 46 through Bakersfield, past Tehachapi and Mojave over to 395, then South on 395 to I-15, I-215 to I-10. You avoid the L.A. basin completely and get a change of scenary. 46 is a two lane road, but very little traffic. 58 is mostly freeway with stretches of two lane road through the desert. We found an RV park great for an overnighter in Bakersfield, "A Country RV Park", off Fairfax Road.
Modern and clean, wide, long pull-throughs, no need to unhitch the toad, 50 amp service, and only (for Good Sam members) $23 a night!
I recommend this route for those coming down I-5 headed for I-10 and Arizona.
