Good morning group,
We will be heading south next week to Palm Desert. The shortest route takes us down highway five and then through Pasadena. Do not really relish the idea of LA County traffic and wondered if there is a better way even if a few more miles.
Thanks, David

Re: [Country-Coach-Owners] Sacramento to Palm Desert You can take 99 south. It is a combination of fwy and hwy but not a real bad road. Then head east on 58. When you get into Barstow go south on 15. Then take the 330 east towards Redlands and it ends at the 10. Go East on 10. Or if you miss the 330, stay on 15 until you get to the 10 and go east. Taking the 330 cuts off some time and is a little bit easier than the 10 to the 15.
We've taken the 99 south, 58 east several times coming from Modesto headed to Lake Havasu, Az. Where we have a home base (that is going up for sale, and we're full timing as of this spring). We used to live in the high desert of So. Cal. And would take the 15 south etc. to get to Emerald Desert.
Safe travels.

Sure, we often take hwy 99 from Sacramento instead of I-5. Just about as good, many places to stop and it's all four lane. At Bakersfield take Hwy 138 over Tahachapi Pass to Mohave, Lancaster and Palmdale. You will end up at San Bernadino and then take I-10 east.

Thanks Sue, Linda and Jim.
Any suggestions for overnight dry camping after Bakersfield?

Hwy 58 is now almost all 4 lanes to Barstow. 138 is very curvy and 2 lanes (the last time I was on it). 138 will eventually end up at I-15 and then head south to I-10. Either way you'll get to where you are going and miss L.A.!

We went from Modesto to Bakersfield staying at the Orange Grove RV park, then home to Havasu. Can't recommend any good stopping places after Bakersfield, but there may be something around Barstow? There is the Flying J and Pilot truck stops along with the out let malls, but don't know their rules on over night parking.

-Hwy 138 comes into I-5 at Gorman not Bakersfield. It may be better to take Hwy 58 East from Bakersfield through Tehachapi then turn right on Hwy 395 at Kramer Junction - this intersects I-15 near Cajon Pass. South on 15 onto 215 South then exit Hwy 30 East then onto 10 east to Palm Desert.

Stopped at the Flying J in Barstow a few weeks ago. Big parking area for motorhomes separate from the trucks in front/to the side of the front of the building. There was even room there when I arrived at midnight!
